Saturday at noon marked the deadline for hopeful candidates to take out filing papers for the March 3rd local election for multiple local offices from City Council to School Board, including the Mayor's. Those hoping to run have "until Dec. 3 to return their nominating petitions and qualifying signatures of eligible Los Angeles voters," explains the LA Times' Opinion LA blog.
Many were hoping that the inclusion of businessman and "shopping experience" developed Rick Caruso would make for an interesting battle for the Mayor's office, but Caruso's announcement that he would not run left pundits somewhat deflated.
Although Antonio Villaraigosa, the incumbent seemingly hell-bent on raising his national profile, appears on the list of names of those aiming to run, many speculate that he has his eye on a larger prize, but, whether he runs or not, who would be his best opponent?
Names on Saturday's list include the omnipresent Zuma Dogg, Pastor Craig X Rubin, and Walter Moore--who many see has a top contender. The other names--or rather, their occupations--reveal the folly of the campaign, since you have a mix of folks from all walks of life: Union Meat Packer, Exorcist of Presidents, Actor, Entertainer, Structure Painter, Comedian/Actor/Writer, and Producer/Image Consultant.
Things that help, says Opinion LA: "Be rich (either with your own money, or with campaign contributions). Be famous. Be the winner of a previous election."
So who's it gonna be, LA?

I must say, I am SO glad David Caruso isn't running. Even the thought of the possibility that he might win was kind of scary. True, Mayor Tony isn't awesome, but he's way better than Caruso. What do we think Caruso would stand? Turning more land into quasi-public shopping spaces? The key to getting LA back on its feet is public transport, public space, parks, etc...Where do Caruso's interests lie? In shopping centers, with massive, expensive parking lots. He has a clear interest in promoting an agenda that would favor continued dominance of the automobile as a means of primary transport, which might be the single worst thing you can do for this city,
