Classical Pick of the Week: Carmen!
You've probably heard an aria from George Bizet's Carmen, trust us. This video was said to be created by Jim Benson himself, Nokia phones had the annoying el toreador ring tone, Family Guy had the old lady who sang Habanera, and this old Tom and Jerry video are just a few examples. The LA Opera begins their production of Carmen this Saturday, with shows throughout the month of November. Viktoria Vizin makes her debut as Carmen, and the production is conducted by Emmanuel Villaume, who happens to be the Spoleto Festival USA's Music Director.
The Colburn School has a special recession-friendly deal going on in November; all tickets are half off. Next Sunday, renown soloist Paul Neubauer performs chamber music with Ron Leonard (cello) and Joann Turovsky (harp). The concert tickets are 2.50 for students and seniors, and 5 dollars for general admission. They will perform the music of Debussy, Shostakovich, and Mendelssohn. The LA Phil hosts an exciting event this week, with Thomas Adés conducting his own music. The concert features the LA Phil, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and mezzo-soprano Mary Nessinger.
