An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people gathered protested in the streets of West Hollywood and Hollywood last night (as well as in San Francisco). "Maybe losing a right was what our community needed to get us out of the bars and into the streets, but I feel more energized than ever tonight," wrote blogger Boi from Troy who left the march early when the LAPD showed up. "Things started getting tense, as the crowd was blocked in on both sides by LAPD... LAPD’s mistake was stopping the crowd rather than directing it back to West Hollywood. LAPD went on tactical alert, which seemed like an over-reaction, when they should have coordinated with the Sheriff, which handled things well."
In all, seven people were arrested between the two cities where the protests were. The LA County Sheriff's Department, who patrol West Hollywood, arrested three people--two for failure to disperse and one for public drunkenness. All were cited and released on the spot, according to Steve Whitmore of the department. The LAPD arrested four people for disturbance of the peace. One of them was also arrested for battery on a police officer. "The majority of the protest was peaceful anyway except for those protesters," Officer April Harding said.
Laura Hertzfeld was at the LAPD police line in Hollywood taking photos and was graceful enough to let us share them with you. Thank you!

This aerial view from the BBC showed the LAPD beating one arrestee.
KTLA had the footage of 3 LAPD officers beating the hell out of one protester. I can't find the actual video of it online. But if you go to their web site, you can actually see the clip called "Prop 8 protest turns violent".
BOO LAPD! :(
Without the Latino vote,” Mr. Rodriguez said, “Proposition 8 would never have succeeded.
Exit polls in California found that 70 percent of black voters backed the ban. Slightly more than half of Latino voters, who made up almost 20 percent of voters, favored the ban, while 53 percent of whites opposed it.
yeah, lapd was sucking at everything last night. check this out to see how they screwed up a routine traffic accident:

Normally I'm not very fond of the LAPD as they like to waste hours of my time for no reason - supposedly because I look "suspicious" (aka Latino) - but sometimes protesters/crowds do actually get out of hand - like an article I read early today from the Suntimes
“White bitches. F--- McCain. You white police can’t do nothing,” 19-year-old Celita Hart taunted officers as she stood with a throng of Obama supporters in the 6900 block of South Western Avenue, Assistant State’s Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said in a court Wednesday. At some point, authorities said, Hart left the crowd, which had been chanting “Obama, Obama,” walked up to a squad car, and smacked a male officer in the face.
Stay classy America!
first off, quit bitching about the LAPD. they were doing their jobs. they protected us from others and protected us from ourselves last night. they're not the enemy.
I was at that police line last night at Hollywood and Highland and I heard people trying to instigate shit like, "push from behind!" and "police brutality!" though none had been committed. In fact, the guy who jumped up on the squad car wasn't even arrested or even talked to. He just came right back into our group without hassle.
LAPD is not the enemy and instigating them just makes us look like douchebags. stay focused people..
I actually saw the footage on KTLA after the Lakers/Clippers game last night. The guy that got beat ran through a police line (I'm assuming to join his friend already on the cop car) but a few cops grabbed him to the ground. From the chopper view he looked like he was struggling to get free but police "restrained" and cuffed him.
Overall it looked like a peaceful rally turned sit in. As far as I'm concerned that knucklehead deserved it.
The guy jumping on the cop car too but he was lead back into the crowd.
There were different groups going on at the same time last night. I didn't see the police stand off in my group. I wrote out a blog post on what I saw and felt on the ground.

LAPD beating people , seems like another regular day in LA
changeling is a very accurate representation of cops using power to manipulate people and get their own way. two people i know were arrested during the protest. that is ridiculous.
