Late Night Shooting Leaves USC Athlete Injured

USC sprinter Bryshon Nellum, dubbed "the fastest kid in the world," was shot three times in his legs while attending a Halloween party last night near the campus at Leonardo's. The 19-year-old was hit in the left thigh with two bullets and once in his right hamstring, according to abc7.com, and underwent an ultimately successful surgery last night and California Hospital Medical Center near downtown Los Angeles. USC's track coach Ron Allice says he believes Nellum's track career is not over.

The athlete was a star at Long Beach Poly High and, in addition to earning the 2007 Gatorade National Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year title, was also seen as an Olympic hopeful. "He was the nation's No. 1 sprinter in the 200- and 400-meter races and the first athlete to win California state titles two straight years in both races." Nellum had the option of also playing wide receiver for USC's football team, but opted to focus on track.

No arrests have been made in the shooting.
