Not everyone wants you to vote including Donna Mae, an Evangelical Christian who was interviewed for Election 2008 - What White Women Want, a new investigation by Dolly Deadline at What White Women Want
White women are expected to play a crucial and possibly determining role in the election. Dolly explores this new media phenomenon by interviewing an assortment from this group and inviting them to blog about their concerns and hopes for our troubled country. Donna Mae, however, isn’t your typical voter as one of her contributions to this popular and controversial blog attests:
“True Christians do NOT co-sign sin! True Christians read the entire Bible and know that it is WORD that we live RIGHTEOUSLY because we know not the hour of His coming and RIGHTEOUSLY means not choosing evil even if it is the lesser of two evils and John McCain ain’t gonna do none of what you mentioned because the Demoncrats won’t let him first off and also he won’t stand up to them. He said it was okay to take Sarah away from her kids and that it was okay for her to work and not serve her Husband and act like She is the head of the household that is WRONG that is NOT in the Bible!”
The true christians Donna Mae is describing are INTERPRETING the bible rather than reading it and admitting (to themselves at least) that some of it is beyond understanding.
From Rabbi Michael Lerner at Tikkun: "For Torah literalists and fundamentalists, I argue that what the fundamentalists fail to do is to read the actual literal words: that a man should not lie with a man the way that they lie with a woman. The words are striking because in the context all the other sexual commands do not qualify by saying "the way that x does y" but are simply categorical. But here there is no categorical prohibition, but only a prohibition on a certain way of being with a man. So I agree with Torah: men should lie with men in a different way than they lie with women, recognizing and honoring the uniqueness of that relationship. Jesus says nothing against homosexual acts...Nothing in the Hebrew bible prohibits gay marriage. And none of the religious texts prohibits lesbian marriages or affairs."
