Late-Night Snack: Apple Sauce

We're in the middle of apple season and all of the sudden, our late night snacking became healthy. What has come of us?

The craving first hit when at Ralph's, so we picked up some store brand without realizing it contained high fructose corn syrup. Blech. A later discovery found that Whole Foods' organic individual packs are been much nicer and tastier, especially with their hybrid flavors with berries, peaches and bananas. But the best so far has been Santa Cruz Organic's recipe (they're usually known for their juice).

If you're looking to make your own, check out these orchards for your own pickings and plan ahead for Thanksgiving weekend as the Apple Butter Festival out in the 909 marks the end of the fruit's season

High fructose corn syrup may have a complicated-sounding name, but it's actually a simple sweetener, made from corn, that is nutritionally the same as sugar.

High fructose corn syrup is not sweeter than sugar; and high fructose corn syrup, sugar and honey all contain the same number of calories (four calories per gram).

Like table sugar and honey, high fructose corn syrup contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives.

The American Medical Association in June 2008 helped put to rest misunderstandings about this sweetener and obesity, stating that “high fructose corn syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.”

Consumers can see the latest research and learn more about high fructose corn syrup at www.HFCSfacts.com and www.SweetSurprise.com.

Corn Refiners Association

in the name of everything wholesome and yummy, fuck off! all this post was trying to do was talk about making applesauce and you, cornrefiner, had to get all up in this mess to "clarify" what HFCS really is. go away and take your horrible commercials with you.

Perhaps instead of hawking "consumer websites" which are blatantly sponsored and funded by organizations such as yours, you should invite the public to perform their own research on the health effects of HFCS.

For one, Ms. Erickson, HFCS is a highly processed product that occurs as the result of extensive laboratory work, including the use of at least one Genetically Modified ingredient. Of course, I'm sure you are already aware of this. Is this, by most consumers' definition, natural? As per the FDA, sure, but the FDA has been behind the curve for nearly every controversial food product within recent memory.

Secondly, HFCS may have the same number of calories as table sugar and honey gram per gram, but what you conveniently leave out is the tremendous difference in which the human body metabolizes HFCS as opposed to actual natural sweeteners.

Perhaps consumers would do better to check out the studies performed by nonpartisan organizations, e.g. the CSPI and others.

OMG, that top comment (and the response, Ginger!) was awesome. I had no idea that Corn Refiners Association stooges (oops, Presidents!) were lurking around LAist.

Ms. Erickson, you can take your subsidized, processed sweetener the hell out of here and stick it where the colon won't digest. HFCS is unhealthy garbage that's bad for the environment and bad for the body, pure and simple. Shame on you for saying otherwise.

*Ignoring all the other comments and getting to what this post was about...*

I make the best most simple applesauce ever.

Any tart apples (I like granny smith's), cored, peeled and sliced
Sugar to taste

Add a few tablesoons (eyeball it) of water in a sauce pan
Add the sliced apples (use as many apples as you want based on how much applesauce you want)
Cook until apple slices are falling apart
Mash with a fork or potato masher
Add sugar to taste
Add cinnamon if you're so inclined
Eat immediately or let cool on the counter and put in fridge for later

In the words of RR...Yum-O
