Look at Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent, he just looks so angry in that photo. Well, he's sort of angry all the time, probably even when he donated $15,000 to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign that seeks to ban gay marriage in California. "In a disclosure filed with the California secretary of state, Kent listed his occupation as professional baseball player for the Dodgers and his address as Austin, Texas. He gave the $15,000 in a transaction dated Monday but which only now is public," reported the LA Times blog Top of the Ticket. "A review of campaign records shows no other donations to federal or California state campaigns by Kent." Does this mean Kent hates gays? We don't know, but he does appear to be an equal-opportunity hater.

I propose that we ban Jeff Kent from the state of California. No matter how good your numbers are, you'll always be a L-O-S-E-R, Mr. Kent.
Quit drinking that Haterade, yo!
Couldn't he have given that money to starving children?
Molly,
He probably could, but those starving children aren't threatening his marriage.
(I'm obviously being sarcastic - I'm a married gay man.)
I propose we give Mr. Kent the same greeting that A-Rod gets every time he goes up to bat in Seattle... A loud, resounding BOO, or just chant "hater" or "bigot".
He's a hater because he disagrees with Prop 8? Wow...a bit of ironic and contradictory commentary from the peanut gallery.
It's how they roll, El Guapo.
Just ask Joe the Plumber.
Not sure why it's "ironic." Denying a fundamental human right to a minority group = bigotry, based normally on hatred, sometimes on fear or ignorance. No matter which way you slice it. So yes, I think "hater" is an apt description in this scenario. IT would be ironic if he were gay, I suppose, but other than that, nope, no irony here.
Guapo -- he supports Prop 8. He's a hater because of his bitchy, disrespectful attitude in general, not merely this isolated homophobic incident.
Great, so I guess this means the Prop 8 pushers now have even more money to stuff my mailbox with more hate propaganda... as if the three separate unsolicited gay-bashing ads that showed up yesterday weren't enough.
Tried calling the number on the ads four different times to ask that my address be removed from their mailing list, got hung up on each time. Fuck you Knights of Columbus!
El Guapo, I think you misread something. He doesn't disagree with Prop 8, he supports it and just gave the campaign $15,000. Considering that at it's core the entire concept of banning gay marriage is based on hate and fear... than yeah, using the word "hate" in this context seems quite fitting.
I find it incredibly astounding how some are able to peer into Jeff Kent's soul and relate precisely what his thoughts and feelings are.
Such extraordinary superpowers would be of great benefit the Justice League.
Ugh I hate him so much.
Blake DeWitt for second base!
So what? A lot of people Support Prop 8. People are entitled to their opinions. You're singling out one person for persecution when Prop 8 will probably get a "yes" vote from a majority of voters.
I personally wouldn't vote "yes" on Prop 8, but I have a lot of friends and family who would. Some people "hate gays" but I'd say most of them just wish to maintain a traditional definition of marriage. This kind of article is more likely to provoke "hate" than a "yes on Prop 8" voter.
on the other hand, softball players all around LA support the prop 8 ban
I don't understand how this is news, per se.
I know he's a celebrity, but I don't feel it is right for someone to make news out of one's political contribution. It's a nasty little slippery slope.
Is anyone tired of hearing about "traditional" marriage?
on the other hand, softball players all around LA support the prop 8 ban
LOL!!!!
So Manny isn't the biggest jerk on the team after all. Now if they could only get Kevin Brown back...
Excellent and unbiased article LAist.
i don't recall laist ever claiming to be a 'fair and balanced' news organization....did i miss that memo?
ugly american, aren't you done yet? your high and mighty trip is tired.
this is horrible news. i will always BOO him at all future Dodger games. :(
your high and mighty trip is tired.
Hahahahahahahaha!!!! ...oh, that is *classic*
Dissenting Opinion = High & Mighty
You LAleftists are a f*cking trip.
it's not at all that you have a dissenting opinion; it's that you're really fucking condescending about it.
I love how some people describe the taking away of rights and turning a whole segment of the population into 2nd class citizens as a matter of "opinion".
If it was just a matter of opinion, you wouldn't have every bigot in the state of California trying to turn this matter of opinion into a matter of law.
And to think that I used to be a fan. What a massive tool.
Grendel20: If you contribute more than a certain amount to a political cause, it's a matter of public record. Just sayin'.
And yeah... "opinion." Gee, I think I hate Jews and I'm going to campaign to not allow them to live in my neighborhood and not let my kids go to school with them. Because they don't believe in Jesus! Nothing against them, they just don't follow my beliefs. But it's totally cool because it's my opinion!
I have no doubt that some people don't realize what they're doing is based on hate and fear, but it still is. Maybe they do know it, deep down.
Hell in a handbasket. What's next? Black people voting?
You may not think you hate gay people by supporting Prop 8, but I'm sure slaveowners didn't think they hated blacks. Hitler probably thought he was a great guy too.
Bigotry is bigotry.
Eat a dick, Jeff.
what we got in la are drama Queens trying to dictate to everyone mr kent lives i america freedom of choice to vote with his pocket book just like policitally correct bad pitt
looks like Kent has a history of run-ins with "others" http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2141482
yes, the 'drama Queens' are trying to dictate to everyone by trying to have the same rights as everyone else.
uh....try again, "lahipster"
First, Monsieur Kent didn't like Vin Scully regarding the comments he made about the announcer's appreciation of Manny Ramirez. Now he's turned his back on "equal opportunity" lovers. What's next, would he introduce himself to McCain as Jeff the baseman to banish Obama from the face of the earth?
Kent is a douche. Always was, always will be regardless of what and who he votes for.
Kent's a free agent. I'd love to see the Dodgers drop him outright to free up some cash to pay Manny. He's pretty much useless to the Dodgers these days anyhow.
Fifteen thousand dollars worth of swings at backdoor sliders...
Stay classy, Jeff.
I'm pretty sure 100% of that 15k came from LA Dodger revenue including ticket prices, hot dogs, etc. Not that he can't use his own money however he wants but Kent's dead to me now. 15k rises to the level of major donor in my book too and I think the lack of supporting a major political candidate makes his support of this bigotry even worse. It's like "I can't support 1 of 2 major party candidates but I sure can get behind discrimination."
In response to the comment:
"what we got in la are drama Queens trying to dictate to everyone mr kent lives i america freedom of choice to vote with his pocket book just like policitally correct bad pitt"
And "what we got" here is another ridiculous, incoherent comment from lahipster. You know those little red lines under the words? That means you spelled something wrong. Have you ever heard of punctuation? Try it, "hipster" - you might actually make sense one of these times. But of what little I can discern of your comments, my guess is that even with some serious editing, your input would still be pretty lame.
Why is Jeff Kent being attacked for doing the same thing that some No on Prop 8 backers did?
One day I will wake up and live in a country, state, and city, where people do not get ATTACKED for their personal beliefs.
yes, he is wrong, but I won't attack him personally. The measure needs to be defeated.
I also think that if those who are in favor of marriage equality were more CIVILIZED when speaking out against Prop. 8, the measure wouldn't even be close to passing.
You don't need to shout down at people. If you do, that means they will never agree with you in first place. Civil conversations, explaining your views, and trying to understand their views, you know DIALOGUE, is the only way to get your point across.
having said that, I promise to punch the next Obama maniac in the face if he/she puts me down for not voting for him.
trojan2002, quit whining. Sometimes politics inspires passion in people, and then they get shout-y. It's happening all across the country, and it's part of discourse. If you can't criticize a Dodger for donating to a cause you think compromises the civil rights of 10% of the population...well, what the fuck can you do?
greatgatsby, by discourse do you mean the media diluting coverage to allow for an experienced candidate with no legislative accompllishments become POTUS, or is that whining?
All I know is that in this country, I have seen no discourse since 2000 when we actually had a civilized campaign. Since 02, all we have is right shouting at left and left shouting at right. With the winner with a vote of less than 60% claiming they have a mandate.
Prop 8 looks to be passing, and that's because there was NO discourse, just shouting and put downs.
I'm all for discourse.
Who would ever imagine that there'd be no discourse about withdrawing civil rights for people in LA County? That fertile hotbed of civic engagement. That's saved for the important topics like what the percentage change in the per-screen average High School Musical 3 made or if Disney made the right call in putting it out only in the theaters. Thank you Jeff Kent. Now I know I'm not going to let those two bobble heads I have you collect dust in my garage any longer. California Uber Alles. How embarrassing to have two -- not just one but two!! -- Jeff Kent bobble heads. What was I thinking? And this guy played baseball in San Franciso and could possible go into the Hall of Fame as a Giant?? (Double barf in my mouth.) How he must have hated living there. Did he know there were many gay fans at every game he played?
Congrats to Jeff Kent! Geez, shame on him for expressing his opinion. Get over it people! No wonder why he will mostly likely be moving out of that state.
