Street vending may be illegal (well, for the most part), but the food porn it produces is always quite a treat. On Flickr, LAist Featured Photos contributor bscott224 submits this colorful display of onions, peppers and mustard atop a hot dog bought near Maple and Olympic in downtown's Fashion District. Enjoy, it's almost dinner!

Isn't street vending only illegal when you AREN'T licensed? Pretty sure otherwise it's allowed.
omg I'm soooo hungry.
You're exactly right, paul. The majority of those vendors you see on the streets are illegal (see first link) because they are not licensed. In fact, I've seen only a handful of licensed vendors vs. the hundreds of illegal ones--the ones everyone likes.
A licensed vendor has a very strict amount of codes to stick with which is costly (see second link, it's a video of Drew Carey examining the process of becoming a legal street vendor).
When I see my favorite illegal Oaxacan quesadilla street vendor, I'll always buy from her. They can't afford to become licensed, but I'll risk that.
Thanks Zach. If you look at the comments in both threads you'll notice I was part of the original discussions.
While I'm with you on that I will take that chance for my favorite "illegal" street foods, we both are fairly aware of the chances we're taking. My concern with the illegal street vendors is that some people aren't necessarily aware of the risks involved, and aren't well practiced in spotting which situations are better than others. Having grown up around south american and lived in central Mexico, it was a tough learning curve.
