LAst Night's Action: Raindrops Keep Falling on Their Head

Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies 2-2 (bottom of 6th inning). There have been rainouts in the World Series before. But never before has a game been suspended in the World Series. Cole Hamels had managed to keep the Rays down to only one run until the top of the sixth inning when the Rays manufactured a run to tie the game. Although the commish Bud Selig promised that even if the Rays hadn't scored the tying run the game wouldn't have been called, it allowed the Rays to take a sigh of relief. Meanwhile the Phillies once again regressed to the team that couldn't get a hit with runners in scoring position. The final 2 1/2 innings will be played tonight at 5pm. The Phillies still lead the series 3-1.

Notable Notes

  • A new professional team will hit town starting April. Women's Professional Soccer will start play with the Los Angeles Sol among the seven franchises. Other cities include the Bay Area, New Jersey/New York, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis and Washington DC. The league will expand to Atlanta and Philadelphia in 2010. I'm hoping this league takes off given the popularity of the National Women's Soccer team.

  • Tyrone Willingham has been fired as head coach of the University of Washington football team. He will complete the season as the school searches for a head coach. Willingham who led the Stanford Cardinal in the 90s to a Rose Bowl appearance failed to get Notre Dame and Washington back into national prominence. The name being whispered around as a replacement for Willingham is former Oakland Raiders head coach and USC offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.
  • And the best thing from this NFL weekend: San Francisco 49ers interim-head coach Mike Singletary's postgame press conference. As a longtime Bears fan, kudos to Singletary.
