After more than six months since it was first proposed, Pasadena officials finally passed their new smoking ordinance last night. "The new rules will prohibit smoking in outdoor shopping and dining areas, in ATM and movie ticket lines, within 20 feet of building entrances and at outdoor events like the Rose Parade. That would make it nearly impossible to smoke in Old Pasadena, and other commercial districts of the city," reports the Pasadena Star News. "Violators would be fined $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second and $500 for third or subsequent violations, according to staff reports. Smoking in parks is already prohibited in the city." The ban could go into effect in 30 days, but the city may take some time to develop a marketing campaign first.

As much as I don't like smoking, I'd prefer more enforcement of speeding automobiles, since they are more likely to kill you without your consent than brief exposures to second hand smoke.
WOW. How is this legal?
It is legal because all of those locations are either city real estate or receiving permits from the city to do business / exist. A city, therefore, can enact ordinances for the public safety of its citizens that apply to any location that is permitted by the city.
Think of it as the "pick up after your dog" laws. The city can force you to pick up poo from the ground practically everywhere except your personal property, because its just better for the city if they make you do it. Basically, smoking is shit and the city says they don't want your shit where everyone can smell it.
I'd rather they create an "anti-douchebag smoking law" - meaning you can smoke - but you can't throw the butts & ash anywhere you please, can't stink up everyone's clothes w/excessive smoke blowing, and are forced to adhere to the same breaks as non-smokers(not these extra needed smoke breaks they seem to get).
I'm with you phdiaz I'd like to focus only on the inconsiderate smokers. There are lots of considerate smokers and I don't like lumping them with the rest.
Thats like saying there are lots of considerate speeders on the highway. I don't want to lump them in with the dangerous speeders. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how nice you are and responsible about your OWN health, Speeding - and Smoking - is dangerous to OTHERS. Whether you are responsible or not, someone getting on at an onramp is going to get plowed by your 100mph vehicle that they didn't see coming.
how will this affect the cigar shop on Green St, Cigars by Chivas?
Someone going 55mph can kill as well so I don't know where the correlation is to smoking. A person lighting up near you is not going to instantly kill you from the smoke,(unless your deathly allergic to smoke) so I can be a little more forgiving.
If all smokers were considerate of their surroundings and others there wouldn't be a need for a smoking ban in my opinion. Unfortunately most are not.
I'm not a smoker and actually dislike smoke but we are all people here and all I'm asking for is consideration to one another while in public. I don't fart in a elevator so don't light up next to me while I eat. (or fart next to me while I eat too.)
There are so many other offenses I can think of. That is a really intrusion of our rights, really, does Pasadena own the outdoors now?
How about they put a stop to those douche bags that drive with the bass pumping so loudly in their cars that my windows rattle as they drive by? A serious disturbance if you have been awakened by some idiot as he drives by late at night.
Or how about shuffling the tickets out people that run red lights?
This is just another to stuff the pants of another fat bureaucrat who want to take away our rights instead of actually working to stop crime.
good job Pasadena.
Thank effing God. If people were capable of policing themselves or showing some form of civility it'd be one thing, but they don't.
I can't tell you how many times we've been out to dinner with our daughter (from the time she was an infant to now) and had hipsters or Euro-trash plop down next to us at an outside restaurant meal and start puffing away . You either ruin your time out by having to directly address someone's stupidity or ask for check and leave early. I can't wait for the rest of LA to send everyone off to the dumpsters to smoke. Yee-haw!
