It's happened and happened and now happened again: "I was doing my normal bike ride on Ballona Creek bike path I had just gone 23 miles out of 26 and was going about a speed of 19 and 4 hispanic guys about 15 -18 years of age(they had on jeans and t-shirts some with black T's and they ambushed me into the rail and I flew over the rail on the crew side. they started beating me up and wanted everything I had."

i guess the best thing you can do if being ambushed is to crash into the perpetrators. better yet, fly off your bike, as in off-the-top-ropes, into them with your arms extended out. you may be able to knock them all down.
but to avoid all this, dont ride ballona unarmed. they should really post some notices around the trail about these muggings so that people are more cautious while on that death-trail.
There is a ride this coming Saturday to promote community safety and usage of the bike path. Clearly there is still a problem so hopefully events like these will help out.

Thanks for the heads up, willy, but it looks like that link is dead.
Here's some more info I found:

I think this guy is making this up
since he never state where on Ballona creek
he was !
was he in Marina Del Rey? Los Angeles?? or Culver city? what is (or was the closet intersection again
he didn't tell us
and what rail is he talking about
you mean railroad tracks we Know there are NO
railroad tracks there!
I doubt this is made up. I've been down there plenty of times in the past few weeks, and there are always shady characters down there. Who cares what intersection it was at, anything east of Lincoln is all the same. The "rail" is the railing that stops you from falling into the LA River, genius.
Like it's not bad enough that motorists hit us with their cars. "Hey guys! Thanks for helping out the environment and alleviating the whole traffic thing. Oh, by the way, you may be mugged and/or killed while doing this favor for all of us."
If this biker had a concealed weapon, everything would have been fine. Someone invent a gun holster for a hybrid bicycle please.
