Pasadena Smoking Ban to be Considered Tonight

Pasadena could ban smokingThe next in a series of local cities considering smoking in public bans is Pasadena. After a hearing in May and last week, the council is expected to vote and most likely pass a resolution that will "prohibit smoking in outdoor malls, shopping areas and centers; in outdoor dining areas; in waiting lines, such as at movie theaters, ATMS, ect.; and at public events like the Rose Parade and community fairs," according to the Pasadena Star News.

Sorry, but anyone that argues against a smoking ban in public places where kids and families and others could get a whiff of second hand smoke is a moron. We're doing this for your own good people.

If you're more inclined to accept findings from USEPA or the Surgeon General, then you believe chronic exposure secondhand smoke (not occasional exposure, like being in a bar, but being married to a smoker) increases a nonsmoker's risk of cancer by 20%. But the baseline lifetime risk for nonsmokers getting lung cancer is only 0.4%, and a 20% increase means that a nonsmoker's lifetime risk of getting lung cancer FROM CHRONIC EXPOSURE to SHS is only 0.08% (.4 X .2 = 0.08). That a lifetime risk of less than 1/10th of 1 percent! Does that justify passing a law that will revoke property rights and personal liberties, and put people out of business and out of work?

Let's get real, the health risks, if any, from secondhand smoke are ridiculously low and do not justify a smoking ban.

All bans do is marketing for Smoking Cessation Products.

Every thing we have been led to believe about the dangers of Second Hand
Smoke by the Surgeon General bas been repudiated as false by many
independent studies. Even Federal Judge Osteen, an avid anti-tobacco
Judge, has vacated the EPA Report of 3,000 deaths due to SHS as a fraud.
Not one person has been proven to have died due to SHS.

The majority of information showing harmful effects of SHS come from
those who profit from the misinformation. The Pharmaceuticals are using
this as a Marketing Plan to sell Smoking Cessation Products.

Smoking Bans have never been about Health. They are about Profit.

HOUSE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND COMMERCE HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT SUBCOMMITTEE STATEMENT OF HON. THOMAS J. BLILEY, JR. JULY 21, 1993 Mr. Chairman, I am testifying today in order to report to the Subcommittee the results of my extensive investigation of the EPA's handling of the controversy surrounding environmental tobacco smoke or "ETS". As you know, in the past the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of this Committee has conducted hearings on EPA's abuses of government contracting requirements. So pervasive is the level of abuse that Chairman Dingell has characterized EPA's pattern of contract mismanagement as a "cesspool". EPA's Inspector General recently has confirmed that such abuses also have taken place in connection with a number of EPA contracts involving ETS, and the O and I Subcommittee's own investigation is continuing. In addition to various contractual improprieties, however, my own investigation suggests that in its consideration of ETS, the Agency has deliberately abused and manipulated the scientific data in order to reach a predetermined, politically motivated result. EPA's risk assessment on ETS released in January of this year claims that ETS exposure is responsible for approximately 3,000 lung cancer cases per year in the United States. Analysis of the risk assessment reveals, however, that EPA was able to reach that conclusion only by ignoring or discounting major studies, and by deviating from generally accepted scientific standards. EPA's willingness to distort the science in order to justify its classification of ETS as a "Group A" or "known human" carcinogen seems to stem from the Agency's determination early on to advocate smoking bans and restrictions as a socially desirable goal. EPA began promoting such policies in the mid-to late 1980s, ostensibly as part of its efforts to provide information to the public on indoor air quality issues. The Agency then decided to develop the ETS risk assessment to provide a scientific justification for smoking bans. The risk assessment thus was never intended to be a neutral review and analysis of the ETS science. Rather, it was intended from the start to function as a prop for the Agency's predetermined policy.

Not surprisingly, therefore, the process at every turn has been characterized by both scientific and procedural irregularities. In addition to the contracting violations mentioned at the outset, those irregularities include conflicts of interest by both Agency staff involved in preparation of the risk assessment and the members of the Science Advisory Board panel selected to provide a supposedly independent evaluation of the document. I will not itemize each and every one of these improprieties. Instead, I ask consent that a memorandum providing full details of the history of EPA's handling of ETS be included in the record. The memorandum summarizes the results thus far of my investigation into the Agency's handling of ETS and is based on publicly available documents, extensive correspondence between myself and former Administrator Reilly, and interviews conducted by my staff with the responsible EPA officials. there is more... http://www.pipes.org/Articles/Bliley.html

We're doing this for your own good people.

This is only the beginning of the control they are after, you idiot. You have the herd mentality problem.

I have read every comment and I wonder at some statements made by some who believe that their anti-smoking ideas are actually their own opinions. We are inundated 24/7 by misinformation from the EPA, ACS and other agencies that make their living using their fraudulent studies. If not for Big Pharma there would be no smoking bans. Every time a statement is made, if we stop and think, follow the money. Every ban costs every taxpayer. Profit is made only by those who sell Smoking Cessation products.

Will the government reimburse all the businesses that spent thousands of dollars on patios and other retrofits for their smoking customers?

Will the businesses that spent thousands of dollars on patios for their smoking customers be reimbursed?

Ok forget the health hazards. How about the fact that most smokers are just plain rude, inconsiderate, and oblivious to their surroundings and to others.

I have seen way too many times where a cigarette butt is discarded out the window, sidewalk and drain thinking it will magically evaporate away.

I personally like to enjoy the outdoor dinning areas, when available, but would have to move inside when a smoker decides to light up, better yet a smoker lights up right outside the door of the establishment thinking some how the smoke won't travel near the outside tables or go in to the restaurant.

When someone comes up with a smokeless cigarette or can control the laws of physics and can keep the smoke from contaminating us non-smokers then as far as I'm concerned I'm all for the smoking ban everywhere.

Truly amazing to me that people make the ignorant comment about bans being "for our own good". ASK US from what we want to be protected!! I do NOT need a NANNY government to take care of me nor do I want a nanny government! What you fail to realize is WHAT'S NEXT? The feeling of power is a disease to these anti groups, far more damaging than the cancer they proclaim SHS/ETS creates. If Pasadena is banning smoking while in line at an ATM, then they should also ban cars from being within 25 feet of an ATM.

The EPA report was not only ruled against by a Federal Judge but also by THREE Congressional Committees - THREE! And what report did Carmona use in his 2006 report? The EPA report. He DID, however, leave out several of the biggest, longest studied (some over 38 years) because they didn't toe the line of the anti smoking agenda. Did you also know that there are now at least 5 complaints filed against Carmona's report with the Office of Research Integrity, Health and Human Services? Here's a link to 4 of them: http://opponentsofohiobans.com/news.aspx Carmona repeatedly left our studies and reports done by groups OTHER THAN TOBACCO CONTROL while his report is heavily laden with reports from people and universities who rake in MILLIONS upon MILLIONS in grants for more and more studies. And who was and is the biggest contributor to these universities in grants and who contributed millions to the ACS, Am. Lung Assoc., etc? The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation who was created by Robert Wood Johnson, the originator of Johnson and Johnson (JnJ). The RWJF owned (as of March 2008) 35,435,189 shares of JnJ stock. From what does JnJ stock profit? The sales of Nicorette and Nicoderm! (RWJF also funds obesity grants in excess of 1/2 billion dollars-who owns splenda? JnJ. Who owns a bariatric survery? A JnJ company).

So the antis have teamed up with the Pharmaceuticals because the pharmas (or their NON profit foundations) fund the antis who in turn, get bans implemented which drives the need for more gum, patches and drugs. Get the picture? It's an elaborate marketing strategy. Because they're legal drugs doesn't lessen the fact they push drugs. Are stock prices artifically inflated? Are laws bought and paid for that impact the bottom line of these companies extortion? Is there a pattern of corruption? According to an article I read the other day, the BEST success rate for quitting smoking long term is COLD TURKEY. But aren't all these "quit smoking" groups pushing the drugs, patches and gum? Why, if the best success is without them?

I guess only a federal court could answer that question.

The RWJF, aka JNJ who funds smoking bans and profits from smoking cessation products really really tahnks you smoking ban pushers, profits will be great while yor community businesses suffer. Again, big pharma thanks you!!

The tobacco industry sure has its minions out today!

What nerve they have. Virtually all these "independent" sources have a tobacco origin. They quote Bliley, the well-known "Congressman from Philip Morris." They call an ex-tobacco lobbyist from North Carolina an "avid anti-tobacco judge." They forget to point out his opinion (accused of "judicial plagiarism") itself was tossed.

All this swill doesn't pass the stench test, which is why legislatures look at actual science in open hearings (not anonymous internet ravings), and consistently vote for smoking bans.

And oh, those corrupt tobacco control folks--how dare they work so hard to put themselves out of business! Unlike these tobacco minions, who work so hard to keep people smoking.

And dying.

hey a word of advice for any pissed off smokers in the area...the Little Cave still has a pretty big smoking section outside and remains in use because it is not technically in the city limits affected by the ban! cheap drinks, good crowd, and you can SMOKE if you choose.

myspace.com/thelittlecave

I recently was at the Little Cave bar which is near Pasadena, and they have a big smoking patio where smoking ISN'T banned...

If you're a smoker in Pasadena, maybe this is one last place where you can have a cigarette.

Finally to the point!

Since the Little Cave bar is afterall a business and not in public, the choice should be left to the owner of the establishment. If he or she has a client list of smokers, then why limit the list of clients and put themselves out of business.

The property that the smokers are standing on is a privately owned establishment. ... Not owned by the city or municipality. Since Nicotine isn't classified as a narcotic, how can someone not have the right to use something legal?

Of course, in public the rights of the non-smokers are being violated every time a cigarette is introduced, so keep the smoking on the patio of the Little Cave.

you guys, the Little Cave bar is a great establishment located outside of city limits. they have a huge smoking patio that is really nice. i'd check it out if you smokers want a nice place to smoke at.
