This weekend marks Pasadena Heritage's annual Craftsman Weekend celebration in Pasadena, which spotlights the Arts and Crafts movement which had its roots firmly planted in the area and in North East Los Angeles (NELA) at the turn of the 20th century.

Opening today at the Huntington Library is an exhibit destined for the Smithsonian and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston focused on legendary Pasadena designers Charles and Henry Greene. The Greene brothers were the visionary architects behind many of the beautiful Arts and Crafts style bungalows that sprung up in the sprawl of Pasadena and its environs one hundred years ago, including the famed Gamble House, which is hosting a variety of centennial events and exhibits centered around Greene & Greene. The Pasadena Museum of History and the Pasadena Museum of California Art also have shows about the Greene Bros.

The Huntington exhibit, "A `New and Native' Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & Greene," offers a look into "how the brothers' distinctive style developed in reaction to the climate and terrain they found in Pasadena when they arrived in 1894 - and the wealthy Midwestern patrons who could afford to indulge in something fashionable and different," explains the Pasadena Star-News.
