Mini McCain Poo Art Found in Venice

Venice artist, designer and activist Greg Beauchamp has been going around Venice and Santa Monica putting mini flag poles into dog poo that say "McCain" and a phrase under it such as "Healthcare Reform" or "Campaign Tactics." It sounds weird, but he's found his public art experiment to be enjoyable.

"While I was putting flags in poo around Venice, people stopped, and smiled, and took photos and chatted and overall, became happy," he explained in an e-mail. "Maybe it was the message, or maybe it was the act, but what I found was that as I moved, they moved. And it felt good. Good enough to share."

Beauchamp plans to do more art right before the election, but this time on a larger scale, he hints: "it entails large replicas of the signs and the public garbage cans that line the street."

Hilarious. Though, I'm concerned people might leave their dog's poo more often now that they think it could be turned into art. Moral Hazard.

seriously, pick up your poops - that shit (literally) is in my hood and SUCKS!

So-cal loses one of it's flagship environmentalists, LA Democrats promote dog-poop art that eventually flows into the ocean. Thanks guys. You all got some class.

Hmm, I wonder.. Do you go around picking up all the random dog crap that you see? No you probably don't, you probably step around it just like everyone else, and check your shoes to make sure you didn't step in it. No point in blaming Democrats for dog poop. This artist is simply making a statement, and at the same time bringing awareness to how much dog poop there is. Oh by the way.. McCain is crap :-P

Totally been done before

When I lived in Venice I would see the Bush poo flags on the sidewalk.

Unoriginal, unless it's the same guy... or even if it is.

Is putting the flags down in the poo considered littering? Someone with legal background, help me out here.

as he moved, they moved ... all after rover moved.

No legal background but I can see if not a littering offense then it's in violation of laws prohibiting the posting of signage on public property.

And if the artiste does this crap to the crap within 100 feet of a polling place on Nov. 4 he can be charged with electioneering.

HI Lala,

Your two-party politics fit well with this post. I do wonder if you speak for all the registered LA Democrats here on LAist, or is it just you that agrees with Zach that this tird-plated "activism" (literally this time) is justifieable at the expense of putting dog shit into the waters of Venice. You reek of an Amateur...

scoty your reaction is far beyond lala's take on things. In fact I'd go so far as to say he could just as well be an independent as anything. Talk about amateur!!!

And frankly I do pick up my dog's poop, but gave up on "correcting" the rampant random poop left by others. Too much of it to deal with and time has shown me, vividly, that if I take on others problems expectations begin to take hold.

I other words I don't like it, but am woefully ill equipped (not being a city agency and all) to deal with the leavings of others.

There. I hope that gives you a tiny bit of perspective.

Yeah -- someone was doing this same thing on my street in "Franklin Village" a couple of years back, but with pics of Dubya and Condi.

Stoop to scoop, people.
