Kevin Bronson at his Buzz Bands blog reports on the next music venue to go under. "Safari Sam’s, the east Hollywood nightclub that opened in April 2006 with grand plans and big dreams, closed quietly last week." He says that the owner has been rumored to be in debt and "the club never found its niche in booking acts that would consistently fill the venue. Last week, employees got abrupt notice that the club was being shuttered."
Interestingly enough and not necessarily related to their closure, Safari Sam's was one of two clubs to close this year that also experienced a murder. On February 10th, a 27-year-old man was stabbed to death in the parking lot of the venue. One month earlier, a man was shot dead in the parking lot of the now closed Crash Mansion in downtown. Similarly, the House of Blues in West Hollywood could be shut down by the city after a pattern of violence that has continued for a year.
Update: "Previously scheduled shows at Safari Sam's have been moved to the Regent Theatre," reports LA Underground and the LA Times just published a note on their guide for Sam's confirming the move: "as of October 2008, Safari Sam's has temporarily moved to 448 S. Main St. Expect new details and a new entry soon."

Oh my god this makes me sad. Seen a couple bands there in the past couple years and have always loved the dive vibe.
All of my friends loved Safari Sam's. That's pretty sad.
I wonder how long Crash Mansion was operating with a suspended liquor license? I was there for a concert June 19 and had cocktails. There's just not a lot around it, yet, though, that would draw people to that area.
This is sad news, especially given how hard and long it took for the place to finally open.
From driving by many times on Sunset and seeing packs of skinny-jeaned smokers loitering outside Safari Sam's, it's amazing that place would go out of business. Maybe the smokers never went inside?
all ages shows are always a shot in the leg. place looks packed...but no once is buying alcohol...and its alcohol that keeps the place running...the only way the Whiskey A Go Go (which should be gutted along with their management and returned to what it used to be..) gets buy is by having bands Pay To Play.
448 south main is 2 blocks away! Sad for the old place but I'll be visiting it alot more often! It's also near the 4th/main pete's intersection, which should make this a little more lively at night.
The rumor mill says that much of the staff remained unpaid for several weeks, even months, with the promise of a trickle of back pay keeping them from litigation or quitting until they couldn't stand it no longer.
aw, this is sad. yet another great music venue closing ...
I went there once for New Years eve and could not get the waitress to bring me the check.
Left without paying no wonder they bit it.
I had no idea Crash Mansion closed, but that was honestly the worst club I'd ever been to.
No animosity towards Safari Sams. Parking was a bit of a bitch, but I had a good time both times I was there. There's too many Live Nation venues and I suspect this is part of the bleeding.
