What's Your Neighborhood's NYC Doppelgänger?

compare Los Angeles neighborhoods to other cities like New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, etc

Via Gawker, we find Homethinking who has launched a nifty tool comparing neighborhoods in one city to another city. It's fun, but beware: their methodology is not income based ('cause rent is just a tad higher on Manhattan), but rather demographics such as "age, marital status, whether the household has kids or not and the frequency of arts and culture activities," as they explain. It's a start...

Check out the full lists comparing LA to NYC, LA to Chicago and LA to San Francisco. There are plenty of more comparisons to do--Akron, Ohio anyone?--and even smaller cities in the area such as Santa Barbara, Pasadena and Anaheim.

An orange is like a watermelon...

North Hollywood = Astoria? Weehawken? I have no idea.

In what universe is Porter Ranch akin to the LES or Chinatown?

Did these people even visit these neighborhoods?

My fav is that Porter Ranch and Lakeview Terrace are the only Valley hoods represented.

The fires put us on the map. The world has finally heard about PR and LVT.

I have no idea what any of these other cities look like, but I agree with Lindsey, PR is nothing like any Chinatown I've seen. We do have a very good Chinese restaurant called Pagoda Inn. Does that count?

Um skid row is like midtown/Murray Hill?
Does this mean Sherman Oaks is like Newark, NJ?
WTF?

BTW, didn't LVT get on the map back when Rodney King was beaten?

So Bel Air is like SF's chinatown huh? Concept is good, but the execution is beyond half-baked.

crappy comparisons throughout ...

it's as if they were drunk, blindfolded or both.

Props to new ways of thinking about things but I'm not interested in more people comparing LA to NY.

L.A. -> Vegas = not for the faint at heart.

I wish they'd have a comparison of LA to Bakersfield.

Bakersfield = baby LA?

Our community of Stockdale is similar to the Westwood or Bel-Air areas... whereas our East Hills area is similar to Los Angeles' community of Eagle Rock. Pumpkin Center reminds me of certain areas of Sylmar... East Bakersfield might even be comparible to East LA or the Boyle Heights areas.
