As warned by air quality officials, the air is terrible like it has been for the past two days. To that end, Pierce College in Woodland Hills canceled all classes today and tonight. "Because of the unhealthy air quality, we have decided to close Pierce College for the remainder of today," announced Robert Garber, President of the college. "Please have students and staff leave the campus as soon as possible in an orderly fashion.... Our intention is for the campus to reopen tomorrow, but please check the college web site for updated information." Meanwhile, CSUN resumed classes today as campus officials monitor the air quality in the immediate Northridge area.

I had two classes at CSUN today (I am an instructor) and I have to say that it is a scandal that the president didn't close the campus today. By noon particulates were visible in the air, all INDOOR surfaces were covered in a layer of dust, and students were were coughing, covering their mouths with makeshift masks and making arrangements to leave.
Great. Something to look forward to.
(The class I have tonight I really need to show up at, since I'm the TA. My instructor will never cancel class. He lives near campus, so he should know what the air is like!)
But Jackbox, the air is totally at a safe level according to their measurements!
I read the president's message at... ahem... 4:00 am. They did testing overnight... when the winds had died down and humidity is naturally up. In fact, it wasn't that bad today at 7:00 AM when I rolled into campus and I felt like a dope. But within two hours, the air was Creamsicle orange and kids were hacking. I ran my finger along a desk and said "oh, a bit of Porter Ranch!"
Cheer to Pierce for putting their people first.
CSUN made it clear after the earthquake when they held classes next to dumpsters and forced students to walk over construction materials and rubble while rocked by aftershocks that they put the almighty dollar over student's welfare.
Sorry to be harsh, but it was ridiculous to open today. Students have to park in outer area lots and walk for 20 minutes outdoors between classes.
