Here's what the line looked like from an office window looking down on Philippe's birthday celebration today at 4 pm. It stretches around the building from Alameda to Spring Street.
Why why why would you stand in line like that?

Seriously people. It's not like it's an iPhone.
I heard about this last week but didn't even bother since I expected lines around the block. Glad to see my spidey senses still work.
two words:
Huell Howser
Those sandwiches are damn good...
You took those two words right out of my mouth, mintxcore.
mmmmm.. philippe's. I went there about a month ago for the first time (of all the years I've lived in LA).. now you got me craving it. mmmmmm...
The holier-than-thou tone of that last line loses its punch by the fact that the post immediately before this one is advertising for people to go down there.
I loves me some Philippes, but the line on a normal non-100th anniversary day can make me edgy, so I'll just go tomorrow night and pay full price.
HappyCappy, to be fair, the previous post is hardly an advertisement, plus the very first sentence of that post mentions the ugly-ass shoes long-ass line (sorry, still in OJ mode).
So, the first post lets people know what's happening. The second post shows why it's probably not such a good idea to show up.
Comprehensive coverage!
Will: Go by tomorrow and tell them you thought the birthday was today (tomorrow...when you go). If that doesn't work tell them it's your birthday.
I used to be shocked in NYC at the lines for free Ben & Jerry scoops etc. Has nothing to do with the economy -- people LOVE free stuff, no matter what your pockets look like.
It's exciting, it's an event, people want to be there. That's why the line is there.
Brilliant marketing.
Must be as good as Pink's! LOL
