Galaxy Recap: Ban the MLS Cup Final

Earlier this year, Major League Soccer announced the selection of the Home Depot Center to host its yearly MLS Cup final game to be held next month. Galaxy fans should petition MLS to stop giving us this honor, given that it apparently curses the blue-and-gold. The Galaxy have failed to reach the final on each of the three previous occassions in which L.A. has hosted the MLS Cup final game.

So as to not break with tradition, the Galaxy dropped their game against Columbus last night by a score of 1 - 0. The loss leaves the Galaxy with only the slimmest of chances to reach the playoffs. The irony in the Crew helping along in the Galaxy's miseries is that they are coached by former Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid, who, four years ago, was abruptly relieved of his coaching duties in L.A. even though the Galaxy was in first place. Some Galaxy fans consider that move a clear indicator of when Galaxy management officially lost their marbles. Given the consistent degradation of the team since that time, it is hard to argue against that point. To make things more comical, last night's lone goal was scored by Crew forward Alejandro Moreno, another individual with ties to the Galaxy.

Despite losing, last night's game was mostly even and the Galaxy kept up with the league leaders for the vast majority of the game. With a bit of luck, they may have been able to pull out a tie. With only three regular season games left, things are looking rather grim. The Galaxy will need to win all of the remaining games if they wish to even contemplate the idea of reaching the playoffs. However, even with the victories, the Galaxy will need help from other teams in order to qualify. Adding to the challenge is the fact that neither David Beckham nor Landon Donovan will be available for next Saturday's match Colorado.

Perhaps the team will somehow pull out a miracle, but the more likely and realistic scenario is that the team will not make the playoffs for a third consecutive year. Who would have thought that a team with a world class midfielder and an MVP candidate would be in this situation? Then again, it has a tendency to remind one of the old saying don't put your eggs all in one basket which the Galaxy certainly have done.

It is time to start planning for next year.

Yea, sorry Galaxy fans. As a Chivas USA supporter, i'm grinning ear to ear.

Look at the bright side: you won't have to travel far to cheer against Chivas when they get to the Cup Final.
