LAist: City to Look into Bicycle Sharing

This is true, and studies on bike safety have shown more bikes on the road means safer vehicle miles traveled for all cyclists. However ever city that has been able to launch a successful bike sharing program already had a far more advanced network of bike infrastructure then Los Angeles. I feel like this is skipping a step to have not even come close to completing the existing bicycle master plan and already be starting up a bike sharing program. If it happens I hope real cycling infrastructure improvements will soon follow.

Though, Gary, every additional person you get on a bike -- even a one day rental -- is another person who has a stake in the whole creation-of-bike-lanes issue.

I'd love to see it happen, but I remain skeptical considering this city seems incapable of basic things like safe bike routes or even a place to lock up a bike in many areas.
