For some reason, this is a perfect sentence - melodic and memorable.

"Her mother told her that being an actor was basically prostitution and threatened her with knives."

Jacy: Thanks for reminding us all how much things change, but also how much they stay the same. Especially in regard to the "it" designation.

I hope you keep these articles up. They are always entertaining and enlightening.

I have seen some of her movies. While they were pretty thin from a plot perspective, she positively lept off the screen with a 10,000 volt personality. I have seen lots of silent films and I never seen anyone who had such screen presence. She was thought difficult not because of her work but because she did not play the Hollywood game. She did not pretend to be someone she was not. She made no effort hid her background or that her mother was in insane asylum. However she did really love her fans. One story is that there was a boy who supported his family by selling popcorn at the Long Beach Pike. She went down to The Pike and spent the day helping him sell popcorn, which he sold a lot of that day.

thanks! From my limited reading, it was hard to tell exactly what her (or her mother's symptoms) were. Either way, it's pretty sad.

Another great post Jacy.

It sounds like Clara lead a full if some what sad life. I have to wonder about the schizophrenia diagnosis since this was way before people were getting diagnosed or treated for depression.
