My Morning Jacket @ Greek Theatre, 9/21/08

Some bands are simply meant to be seen live.

While many artists boast consistent and impressive catalog recordings, often it’s the eccentric and vibrant live performance experience that ultimately outshines the archive. Such is the case with My Morning Jacket, as evidenced by their ambitious and protracted Greek Theatre stop in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

On tour in support of their recent release, Evil Urges (ATO) -- an album considered by many MMJ purists to be a departure from the pure southern/folk/country rock blend -- this modern day jam band from Kentucky has incorporated elements of 70s pop-soul to their trademark guitar stomps and notable power riffs.

From the sing-a-longs of "Off The Record," to the electro tinged, "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt.2," to the guitar heavy show closer, "One Big Holiday," each of Sunday's song offerings introduced something exhilarating into the sonic landscape.

Led by the dynamic and versatile Jim James, these ambitious musical curators slid and pounded their way through nearly three hours of rock madness; covering all ground between piercing falsettos, twangy southern vocals and heavy rock anthems.

that show was fantastic. They are the best American rock band

^^^^^

I can do nothing but whole-heartedly agree. The 2 1/2+ hour-long show went by too quickly. Even the most recent stuff, which I am still warming to, sounded 10 times better live.

Go MMJ go!

Thanks for posting the set list, I was trying to recall it for a friend, and now, bam! You made me look like a million bucks. Got to say I agree; to me better live than recorded.
