At Wednesday's LA City Council meeting, non-Scientologist and resident of L Ron Hubbard Way, Sammi Franklin, and free speech advocate Lisa Derrick stood in the chambers at city hall to explain what it's like to live on a street closed down every weekend of the year.
As in past years, the Church of Scientology requested that the weekly event be considered a special event by the city in order to close the public street, which was called Berendo until 1996, and sidewalks every weekend. Think of their request like a farmers market asking a street be closed every Sunday morning. For any street closure to go through, a councilmember must sponsor a motion that will go up for approval by the council.
It's such a standard type of motion, every week, a variety of special events are passed with little public comment or opposition (block parties, weekend festivals, etc). But on Friday, the Scientology motion was continued to be discussed further on Tuesday, which will be aired live on Channel 35 or the internet.

Yes, there are non-scientologists living on L Ron Hubbard Way. I remember when it was called Berendo St, when Scientology behaved like a neighbor you never met and kept it's activities and members at a distance, not invading the quality of life of the "wogs" they so distain.
This should be investigated because nowhere else in Los Angeles are you going to find a street overtaken by a nonprofit organization by City Council consent.

I asked her if any other city in the US has a street that gets closed every weekend. She does not know about all the cities in the US.

I live in an ordinary residential neighborhood.
Let's say I have a neighbor, who is very mentally ill and unstable. He is paranoid and vigilant. He prowls the streets all hours of the day and night, writing down license plate numbers and peering in windows to take pictures. He frightens the children and scowls at little old ladies.
Eventually, the police would come to take such a person to a hospital. And the neighborhood would draw a collective sigh of relief. Perhaps he would return, in a more stable frame of mind.
But what happens when your paranoid, psychotic neighbor is a multi-billion dollar corporation, with a decades-long history of using blackmail, burglary, and infiltration to influence political officials?
Then it's no longer my neighborhood, but his. And in this case, since he's a religious lunatic, my neighborhood becomes his personal Holy Land.
Interfere with the Holy Land, and you will be labeled a "religious bigot." That's coming, I'm sure.
It's always interesting to see who stands up to face a bully: in this case, two petite and articulate women. Brava, Brava! to you both.
Your actions demonstrate a greater degree of courage than the unschooled observer might imagine.
I'd make a generous bet that one or both of these women was followed home from this very hearing by a private investigator.

I walk by that street everyday and am harassed by their security on bikes. They ride on the sidewalks forcing you to manuever to avoid them.
The city doesn't want to do shit about it and I doubt they will.
Hahaha, their bike cops are HORRIBLE. I ride down Fountain and have passed by LRH Way hundreds of times. The bike cops ride on the wrong side of the road, pull out without looking, cross the street on a red light, and one once tried to stop me for "biking too fast." Are you fucking serious? cars go faster than me, idiot.

I wrote Mr. Garcetti yesterday and I actually got a phone call from one of his field deputies today.
She said they have been getting alot of complaints and they are looking into what can be done.

The Farmer's Market etc is allowed to close off streets to vehicles, but not to close them off to foot traffic. (Echose os Sunset Junction?)
I think the residents on the cross-streets need to apply for permits to hold a "block party" or similar event. If they are unable to close off the street to foot traffic by non-residents, at least they can crank some Van Halen.

They have been obtaining "film permits", which allow them to restrict foot traffic on the sidewalks. Which would make sense, of course, if they were filming anything, and not just trying to block themselves in, or block everyone else out.
