Confirmed: Metrolink Engineer was Txt Msging Before Crash

Metrolink Engineer Robert SanchezAfter the National Transportation Safety Board heard that teenagers were claiming Metrolink Engineer Robert Sanchez was texting with them moments before the crash, they subpoenaed his cell phone records but were wary saying a similar claim in a Boston crash was made and ended up being false. But these claims were true the NTSB announced on Wednesday night.

They did not say if it was the cause of the collision, but did say he was texting while on duty that day--a violation of Metrolink policy but not illegal. An emergency bill is going through the state legislature right now to make texting while operating a train illegal.

A profile of Sanchez in the LA Times shows that he was a caring man who loved trains and Italian greyhounds but had his moments where things were not so well. He and his gay partner bought a home in 2000, but on Valentine's Day 2003 Daniel Charles Burton killed himself. A year before that, Sanchez served 90 days of jail on weekends for stealing a video game console. He also reportedly had diabetes and some wonder if that played a role in the crash.

Weird that he got 90 days in jail for stealing an x-box and even weirder that he was allowed to have such an important job even with that on his record.

A little of the falling through the cracks. TOTALLY... Ugh.

i don't think it was an x-box - rather the article said some sort of x-box cord....

And then you get this site (Link) who not only take the above L.A. Times article but strap an out-of-context headline on it.

Alert: Homophobic and ignorant comments abound on that article.

I saw that unfortunate head line too, HappyCappy.

This one [link] is something I haven't seen elsewhere either, not sure if KFI actually said this or not:

LA's KFI radio is reporting that the engineer in the deadly Metrolink crash, Robert Sanchez, may have intentionally crashed the train in a suicide, and that the family of his dead lover, Daniel Charles Burton, believes Sanchez murdered Burton and faked a suicide.

Daniel Charles Burton is using a tried and true formula for talk radio ratings. Say something unfounded, unprovable, and ultimately scandalous about someone and hope the ratings go up.

Effing sleazeball.
