After passing out of the transportation committee last week, the motion to extend Metro Red Line service to 3:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday nights from November 1st to January 3rd will be considered by City Council today. Because Metro doesn't have the funding for the expanded service, the "service would be supported in part by private sponsorhips," the motion states.

If passed, the city will also convene a task force with the affected council disticts, the city's transportation department and the business community to create a marketing campaign. Many people are excited for this so see what happens later today. The full motion text is below:

TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE REPORT relative to a pilot program to extend the operation hours of the Red Line between North Hollywood and Downtown during the holiday season.

Recommendations for Council action, pursuant to Motion (Huizar - Greuel - et al):

1. REQUEST the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to consider a pilot program for the extension of operation hours of the Red Line between North Hollywood and Downtown through 3:00 am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the holiday season, November 1 through January 3, 2008. The cost of expanded service would be supported in part by private sponsorships.

2. CONVENE a task force with affected Council Districts, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Metro, and other departments and agencies as necessary, along with the business community, to design a creative and immediate marketing campaign to support this public-private effort and increase awareness of the benefits and availability of special extended holiday Metro Red Line service hours.

That would be awesome, but they should do it all the time, not just during the holidays. It would help alleviate parking congestion in central and east Hollywood during weekends and give bar/restaurant workers a transportation alternative as well.

srsly? why has this taken so long? it'd be so nice to be able to drink at a bar and hop back home without having to leave at 11:30.

I just don't want to hear any complaints when "private sponsorships" turn into "ads everywhere you look." That's the cost of late-night Metro stops...

I've become my father.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO THIS.

We need it SO BADLY.

Alright!!

Late night pub crawls in H'wood again. Just like back in the olden days when I lived there.

Expect to see ads in the MetroVue information screens.

I am ready for this to happen, no more driving to a bar and back. This way we may have less drunk driver on road. Oh yeah and it would be more convenient for everyone. Let's do this.

I don't care if they blanket the subway station with ads, and the video screens blast Paris Hilton eating Carls Jr. Burgers. If they keep the subway operating until 3:00AM, it will increase ridership and get more people to stop driving drunk. A win-win situation.

Yay for late night trains! The red line is perfect to try this out on, and if it is marketed well I think the ridership will be there.
