WORDS: Zócalo hosts journalist E. Benjamin Skinner tonight at MOCA. He’ll discuss his book A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery. Skinner has witnessed negotiations for the sale of human beings in 12 countries and four continents (e.g., a Haitian 12-year-old girl sold as sexual and domestic slave for $50) and will discuss his dealings with former slaves, traffickers, liberators and survivors. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended.
WINE: Tool’s lead singer is really into wines. So much so that he grows and makes his own. Maynard James Keenan will be appearing at Whole Foods in Pasadena tonight (and Whole Foods Venice tomorrow) to sign bottles of his latest releases. The signing's from 4:30-7:30 pm both days.
LISTENING*: The next installment of the LACE listening parties happens tonight with Alejandro Cohen (of the band Languis and Dublab.com) talking about "The Paisley Underground." LACE Listening Parties are interactive public conversations curated by writer-professor Josh Kun. These listening and learning events are "inspired by the current explosion of mp3 players, podcasts and other mobile media, that are used to score the soundtrack of everyday life."
CONVERSATION: The Hammer Museum is hosting a conversation tonight between photographer Amy Arbus and actor-activist Alan Cumming. Cumming graces the cover of Arbus's new collection of black and white portraits of celebrated stage actors. The program starts at 7 pm tonight. The program is free, but tickets are required and are available at the Billy Wilder Theater Box Office one hour prior to start time. Limit one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis.
THEATRE: Since the show opened last week, maybe they've worked out the kinks and so it's time to drop in and see 9 to 5 for yourselves. Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty star as three office women who tell their a-hole boss to take their job and shove it.
