it's only fitting that this concert is happening at the greek theatre because i consider griffith park to be just about the most classic place in LA. from the wonderful views at the observatory to the miles of hiking and equestrian trails, the live music at the greek and picnicking all over the grounds, griffith has it all for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and sight-seers. for those reasons and many others, i'll never turn down an opportunity to visit griffith park

Step one: Find Dennis Woodruff. (Spots to look for 'im - the Coffee Bean @ Hillhurst & Ambrose, the Bourgeois Pig on Franklin, or his trailer park in Cypress Park.) Step two: Offer to help Dennis distribute his film. Step three: Spend the day driving around with Dennis... meeting people and hanging out with a true legend. That... or dress up as your favorite movie character and hang out in front of the Chinese Theater. You'll have fun and you'll make a couple of bucks. They could use a Bill & Ted, a Beetlejuice, or a Jeffrey Lebowski. No Spidermen needed.

The really tall palm trees that line some of the roads around town. In Beverly Hills and near Dodger Stadium come to mind.

I would have to go with something that have been doing for several years now, which is the movie screenings in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Santa Monica and Gower every Saturday and now Sunday nights during the summer. It may sound creepy to some but its a truely great experience of making a little picnic ( where there are no graves under you) and they project a cool or cult film every weekend. Classic is the Venice Canals...they are under the radar to most people and as you stroll over the cute round bridges and feed the ducks, you forget you are in the middle of a huge bustling metropolis. I just love taking people to this hidden little gem.

Not that I consider it the quintessential L.A. experience, but an interesting place I've been wanting to visit is Campo de Cahuenga. http://www.campodecahuenga.com/ This historical spot is located just a few steps outside the Universal City Redline Station. In fact, the site was discovered due to the excavation for the Redline Station. This is the site where in 1847 The Treaty of Cahuenga was signed. This treaty ended hostilities between Mexico and The United States over posession of the territories of California, and California quickly became a state.

If I had to pick just one classic LA locale that never fails to impress the out-of-town friends and family (as well as shamefully uninformed locals)is Phillipe's. Turkey sandwich with iced tea please!

Classic L.A. to someone like me who is born and bred here is echo park paddle boats, Bhodi Tree, Jane Fonda's Workout and Carney's on the strip. Best steamed hot dogs in L.A. Oh and a rock show at the Greek.

I'm a huge sports fan, so I'd take them to a Dodgers Game or a tour of the Coliseum under the peristyles there are some great great stories posted. Its awesome.

Go see some live music at Molly Malones, or just enjoy a pint of beer and some pub food. Molly's has been around since prohibition and is the namesake for the famed Irish punk band, Flogging Molly, who played there every monday night for years.

Watch a double feature at the New Beverly. You get some awesome movies there. They're all on 35mm and there are occasional celebrity sightings. Tonight and tomorrow is Barton Fink and Miller's Crossing. Last time I was there was to see Robocop and Die Hard. That was badass.

Being a Bay Area transplant (and a total dork), I felt the need to go to all the bars and diners in LA that were featured in the movie "Swingers" ie 3 of clubs, The Derby, etc. I didn't feel like I knew LA till I did that!
