Blogdowntown has been following a city council motion that would extend the Red Line subway hours to 3:00 a.m during the holiday season on weekend nights. At Wednesday's Transportation Committee meeting, the group pushed it another step forward when they endorsed the idea. Since there is little funding for this on Metro's end, it's the business community that's committing funds in hopes to prove that the late-night service can sustain itself. The city council will vote on the motion next Wednesday, September 17.

How about extending the Gold line past midnight? Nothing says fun like leaving downtown at 11:30PM to catch the last Gold line train from union at 11:45PM - because a cab ride from Union to Pasadena is a $45 ride.
ITA ph.
I'd like to see them all run 24/7/365.
phdiaz:
South Pasadena would never let that happen.
THIS!
More like this! This is not only sensible but also awesome. Jesus, it would probably increase business for establishments along the red line accessible parts of town, (especially bars and clubs) and also increase interest in using PT in general.
Two of the biggest obstacles in increasing use of PT in LA are:
1) So many people work in areas not accessible by train (and requiring a 4 jillion year bus ride), so they drive.
2) They can't use the train at night if they want to do anything past 10 PM, so they say fuck it and drive. This of course leads to more DUIs. And also resentment of the train, which for a lot of people just seems like a joke. Why use something that serves absolutely no benefit to you, and is actually an inconvenience to use?
I assume (actually, I hope) this would be a test run to see if LA would respond to train access at night, and that the other lines would follow suit. I certainly hope so. Maybe if the results are good the fuddy duddies in Pasadena will relent. Or maybe we could put a proposal to have the gold line stop at the highland park station after midnight. ;)
I'm willing to bet that at minimum, the gold line connection between Union station and cal state, whenever it's finally completed, would run on these hours.
Also, I agree with JRB - the trains ought to run all day and night. Though, I'd be willing to accept the trains running on their current useless schedule Sunday-wednesday and then switching to all night thursday-sat.
I would definitely use the trains for bar-hopping if they ran til 3am. I don;t know if that will increase ridership, but it will increase my bar-hopping.

What connection is that? The Gold Line extension under construction is to the Eastside, not to CSULA. Did you even check the map at Metro before you posted?

No, I guess you didn't.
That correction made, perhaps you also missed the key phrase in the original posting:
Since there is little funding for this on Metro's end ...
This is an acknowledgment of another inconvenient fact, which is that Metro doesn't have the operating funds available to run the rail service "24/7/365" (as another commenter said). They might be able to go later if Measure R passes, since some of the sales taxes generated are earmarked for rail operation.
But simply wishing it to be, or posting your opinion on a blog, doesn't make it so. Get real.
Always nice to have you participate in the discussion Kymberleigh.
Yes I realize that 24 hour rail costs money, and that the biggest likely reason we don't have 24 hour rail is lack of funds. But L.A. must be one of the few urban centers of this size that doesn't have 24 hour rail service.
How large would the price tag be to run a train even once an hour after say 3am?
"But simply wishing it to be, or posting your opinion on a blog, doesn't make it so. Get real."
Gee, I though MTA's current ad campaign encouraged us to "Imagine".
Isn't that what we're doing?
