Photos from Chatsworth Train Crash

The area around Stoney Point Park felt chaotic a half hour after the crash between the Metrolink commuter train and a freight train this afternoon. Details about what just happened were coming out in pieces as a group of neighbors gathered on a corner at a police line at Rinaldi St and Canoga Ave. A commuter who said he was in the last car of the train was standing on the sidewalk. He looked phased and disturbed but mentioned he saw dead bodies before walking away to call someone to get the hell out of there.

Further within the scene, it smelled of engine transmission fluid. A triage area was being setup as a small group of injured commuters were being treated near the backyards of neighbors who helped with the rescue. It was a sad and grim scene, but first responders were there immediately to lend a helping hand. Here's a little of what we saw and we hope the best for the victims and their families affected by this tragedy.

Nice job getting to the scene Zach. But gosh, what a horrible thing to see.

Ballsy Zach, but I know you're CERT trained.

I just watched footage from the crash here in the UK on BBC News. They're even reporting it over here.

Zach...your pictures were really good but what a horrific scene.

Great photos Zach, but who's the guy sitting in the chair watching like it's fireworks or something?

Great call Elise... That was Ballsy. Awesome shots Zach.

Always the professional, Zach. I hope you're not affected by this too much. I still can't believe it.

"Great photos Zach, but who's the guy sitting in the chair watching like it's fireworks or something?"

In a major disaster, they set up triage areas, sometimes marked by different-colored tarps. Sometimes they write on people with markers or tape - as Zach shows in a later picture, they used very civilized laminates.

This guy is in the minor/delayed triage area. That means he was in the accident and has some level of injury. He has been looked over and is waiting for his turn to be taken care of. He has probably seen some horrible sights; he is probably stunned.
