The older age groups usually go to sleep by 10pm, so I wouldn't worry too much about them, Tom. And they always have infomercials for that chopper thing. The chopper will never abandon them.

I'm pretty sure letterman was speaking metaphorically. And you are exactly right that the Late Night shows are for old people (who generally love it) and old people are quickly becoming the only demographic that still tunes in to real TV so the networks ought to continue catering late night to them. Hmmm, maybe John McCain would consider dropping out of the POTUS race if CBS offers him Letterman's job...
