LEARNING*: Social Media Club LA presents the “Socializing the Music Industry" panel discussion tonight at 7 pm at the Weber Shandwick Offices @ The Pacific Design Center. Panelists including: Anthony Batt, president and founder, Buzznet; Scott Perry, publisher, New Music Tipsheet; Lugas Gonze, XSPF Leader at Xiph.org Foundation; and Nic Adler, owner, Roxy Theater will discuss how digital distribution and social discovery are changing the music industry. (When was the last time you BOUGHT a CD?). Btw, co-moderators are Andy Sternberg, director of Interactive, Live Earth (and LAist's news editor!), and Jackie Peters, founding partner, Heavybag Media.

9/11: We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the HAMMER Forum tonight at 7: “The War on Terror: Seven Years After 9/11.” Jonathan Turley, George Washington Law School professor, will ask if we are “retaliating against the 9/11 attacks by attacking our own freedom?” He’ll explore the effects on the Constitution and our civil liberties. The forum will be moderated by Ian Masters—journalist, commentator, author, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, and the host of the radio program Background Briefing on KPFK 90.7FM.

FILM: The documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself comes back for a return engagement to the Aero in Santa Monica this weekend. “A must-see for Los Angeles history buffs and cinema enthusiasts, who will marvel at the hundreds of archival and film clips revealing an almost secret history of the City of Angels.” Discussion following with director Thom Andersen.

THEATRE: Wendie Malick and Charles Shaughnessy perform a staged reading tonight at 7:30 of Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for Helen Gahagan Douglas. The play “follows Helen from an entitled Republican and successful stage actress to an incorruptible liberal congresswoman who stood for education, internationalism, feminism and integration and finally to the 1950 Senate race where Nixon’s anti-Communist / anti-Semitic smear campaign ended her political career.” Tickets to the staged reading at The Landmark are $100; a reception will follow the performance at the theatre’s wine bar.

ART: It's the second Thursday of the month, and that means it's time for Downtown’s Art Walk. The Art Walk is a monthly, self-guided tour of the art venues in Downtown Los Angeles, which includes commercial art galleries, public museums and nonprofit arts venues. Museum of Contemporary Art on Grand Ave (MOCA), LA Artcore Center, Gallery at REDCAT and the Museum of Neon Art, are just some of the places on the Walk. And there's a free shuttle, so technically those averse to hoofing it don't have to "walk" that much.
