Into the Dust: A Burning Man 2008 Photo Essay

burning man 2008 photos

A couple of weeks ago 50,000 people descended into the desert to watch a wooden man burn. Each one was there with a purpose, whether they were there to heal, let go, forgive, or to be simply reborn. There were no acts advertised, there were no goods or services sold (other than coffee and ice), and the weather promised to be hot and dusty during the day, and cold and unforgiving at night. For it's 22nd year, the Burning Man Arts and Music Festival created a temporary city in the middle of nowhere, and people from all over the world continued to come.

Despite being marred by day-long dust storms at the beginning and end of the week, Burning Man continued to challenge it's participants by introducing one if it's more uninspired themes, The American Dream. It was obvious that artists had trouble with the theme, as the art was noticeably sub-par in comparison to the eye candy that was created in previous years. Instead, music took center stage at the event, as arguably the best DJ lineup was assembled on the Black Rock Desert. Carl Cox, Bassnectar, DJ Dan, Adam Freeland, Marques Wyatt, Scumfrog, Joachim Gerraud, Christopher Lawrence, Rabbit in the Moon, and Josh Gabriel (Gabriel & Dresden) all descended to the desert to rock the masses.

Ooooh, love the giant butterfly pic!

I was at this random brewery thing in Eagle Rock (Barbara's?) the other day and tucked away in this loft/studio were like 5 light up installations from burning man. I was stoked to get to see at least a little part of it even though I didn't get to go. Great pics!

Burning Man has never seemed much more to me than a bunch of naked men riding around on bicycles.

But honestly, Burning Man is an eco disaster. Do you have any idea how much carbon is belched into the atmosphere when they burn that effigy? According to the LA Times, it's more than all of the "carbon created by freeway driving in LA over he period of 5 years". We all need to call on Burning Man now, and demand that they stop the burning at once.

@Kevitivity => Yes, Burning Man is nothing more than "naked men riding around on bicycles." It is so boring, there is nothing to do there, I don't know why I keep coming back for the past six years. Thank you for enlightening me. I'm glad that you will not be going to Burning Man anytime soon.

I don't know where you get your facts, I can't seem to find that quote at LA Times. But even if it is correct, Burning Man buys carbon offset credits for all their outputs, and participants are encouraged to do so as well.

@kevitivity

can you provide a link for that statistic? i've never even been to burning man but that sounds ridiculous. i know the thing is big but christ, i doubt it's that big.

also carbon offsets are offered by various companies and organizations, some of which are useless and really are frauds, some of which are not. i don't know where burning man gets theirs so i can't vouch for them, but your generalization is incorrect.

I think Kevitivity falls in the same John McCain make-up-your-own-facts generalizations. I think he needs a hug, or perhaps a spanking.
