Video of the Day: 37 Bicyclists Detained by 14 LAPD Squad Cars Over Alleged Shoplifting Call
The text of this video may be slightly over the top, but it brings up some great questions. Why were 37 cyclists detained last Saturday night after a manager at the CVS on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks allegedly called about a cyclist looking fellow shoplifting, but with little description other than that. When police arrived, they detained and searched people of all ages, race, height and gender.
What would have happened if the only describing factor was race instead of "cyclist"? Would the police round up any person of said race for over an hour about a shoplifting call?
In the end, a cyclist was arrested for shoplifting a five-dollar beer (two others were arrested and released on scene for possession of marijuana) with more details still coming out. We're glad the shoplifter was arrested, but should have the other 36 been put through that process?

Obviously, it was a group activity and the little shiiiite thought it was mob-rule night. Obviously, he was wrong and the group got punished. I have no sympathy for one brat or a group of brats.
[ report this ]
It's really sad that someone can go and mess up an otherwise chill night for a group by stealing. It's completely unacceptable, but it's hard to weed out who is a criminal before hand. Reading the message board about this incident there were cyclists who were calling for punishment for this guy a lot worse then police had in mind, so it's something that is not tolerated, but it's hard to know who is a coward using a group to hide their criminal activity until something like this happens.
[ report this ]
But were 14 squad cars necessary? LAPD HATE cyclists... and this is coming from a non cyclist. Just from what I've seen in the past they're very prejudice against them. Or they just don't understand.
[ report this ]
Ordinarily the LAPD is actually pretty understanding of cyclist groups, realizing there are better things they could be doing with their time. In the past, massive police over kill against cyclists has been primarily the domain of smaller departments like Santa Monica and Culver City.

"If you want to ride a bike, move to Thousand Oaks or Scottsdale, Arizona. Get the F Outtathaway!!!" -El Guapo
Sure, I'll quit my great job in L.A. and move to someplace where I don't know anyone and would be bored stiffness for your convenience.
Did you ever stop to think about the fact that considering less than 1% of commuters in L.A. bike that 99% of your traffic delay is from other cars. Why don't you tell all those other motorists to get out of your way? Some how I picture you probably tell them to F off too. Lets all go F off together so El Guapo can have the peaceful roads of Los Angeles all to him self.

I would be pretty damn pissed if the cops didnt find the little cowards in this gang who stole from the store! what good is having a police force if they arent allowed to search people who steal? the person who made this video makes a big deal out of the fact that the store manager didnt provide a good description. obvious that this person never worked at a retail store before. when little punk high school kids mob your store it happens so quick you cant get a decent description.
bunch of bored valley rich kids stealing beer. what else is new. trash the whole lot of em. the valley is a real piece of fuckin work. first it was ugly smelly punk rockers then it was skate punks then it was taggers and now its fixed gear. they are bored and have no parental figures because mommy and daddy are busy filming pornos. these kids in the valley need to grow up and get jobs.
[ report this ]
Without Reasonable Suspicion - the searches are unconstitutional
Without Probable Cause - the arrest could be thrown out and civil rights lawsuits could be granted
[ report this ]
Fourteen patrol cars does seem overboard at first, but I can see why LAPD respond with such numbers, especially if the call came in from store personnel that exaggerated the number of cyclists and their alleged crimes. Better to have the extra officers and not need them then roll on a scene understaffed -- and 37 potential suspects is no small number.
It's a frustrating shame all cyclists had to pay such a price for the selfish actions of one, but if there's a positive to take away from this (at least from what's shown on camera), it's how cooperative the proceedings progressed.
[ report this ]
let me see here. a gang of bike rider losers show up to a store and steal some beer. what more reason do you need to search them all. they look like pathetic little bored valley kids. these kids hang out in parking lots with nothing better to do hahahahah none of these kids come from poor families either they are just bored and stuck in the valley with porno star parents. it's obvious they were brain damaged in the womb getting dicked in the head by double penetration!! hahahahhahah
[ report this ]
Wow, way to over generalize a group of people you've never met, "The Motorist". Some bored valley kids also take to bar hopping then driving home and street racing in cars, putting their own and others lives at risk. Stealing is wrong absolutely and should be punished accordingly, but there are worse things people could be doing then riding bikes and hanging out.
[ report this ]
I don't know what to think of this. It sounds like the police responded to a complaint without any evidence. (I hear the CVS employee couldn't identify the alleged shoplifter's gender. Gender is really hard to miss.) How the officers justified lining everyone up and searching their personal belongings based on so little evidence is a mystery.
To find out that the employee was right, that someone did shoplift, saddens & angers me. By alienating the businesses we frequent on rides, this person is alienating them against all riders -- that one guy's actions will affect my experience the next time I'm in that store and maybe others. Don't drag us all down with you.
[ report this ]
I get harassed by cops when I'm alone for either sitting down outside my work on a cell phone, walking home alone, or riding in a car driven by my persian friend - THAT is illegal and unwarranted. F-ing racist cops.
However, a group of cyclists where one(or a few, who knows what the clerk said exactly) - fitting the description of a shoplifter with a bicycle - is sort of warranted. If the actual shoplifter had any balls, he could've just admitted it immediately and spared everyone else.
The shoplifter should be both banned from riding again and taken out - Nancy Kerrigan style - for putting everyone through this. He should've just admitted it immediately to spare the rest.
[ report this ]
Sort of warranted and actually following proper procedure are different things. Stealing is wrong and should be punished, but rounding up everyone who happens to be around is over stepping the bounds of police procedure. What if no cyclists were present and someone stole something? Do you think the cops would have searched everyone who just happened to be in the parking lot since they had no description to go on, and all this over a beer. They come in perceiving cyclists as trouble to begin with so they have an easier time justifying skipping to just search everybody with a bike.

Hahahah, The Motorist is the best LAist Troll in a long time. Keep it comin' dude!

Thanks bro I got a million of them. I say it like it is. I pull no punches. I keeps it real. I speak truths.
Anyway I hope these fuckin whiners learn their lesson for harboring shoplifters in there little gang. Fuckin scumbags. Go work at mcdonald's for 2 lousy hours so you can just buy that beer you losers.
[ report this ]
What whiners motorist? I didn't hear anyone whining.
Answer this question Oh wise one; how many patrol cars show up for a murder? Bet it isn't fourteen.
Seems to me your priorities are seriously twisted. I certainly think so. When my car was broken into some years ago one cop showed up. The damage to my vehicle amounted to close to $700.00 not $5.00. And all the cop did was bitch about the punks who vandalized my car and then told me there was little that could be done about it.
Wow.
I guess if I'd been a business I'd have gotten a better outcome.
I see this as a waste of taxpayer dollars.

HEY, Mr. Motorist—where do you think you're going at this hour? C'mon over here... that's not a request—NOW. We got a report of a Latino male that mugged a couple in this neighborhood. Let's see some I.D., douchebag. What's in your backpack? How about you put it down on the ground and step back against that wall. What? You "don't consent to a search"? Really? You think anyone's gonna take your fucking word over mine? ON the ground NOW, SHITHEAD, DON"T FUCKING MOVE!

Geniuses! I love how everyone's first reaction is WHAA!! WHAA!! the cops treated us badly!! they frisked my poopiehole!! mommy mommy my 4th amendment right was violated!! when it was you ingrates and your gang that shoplifted in the first place!! always someone else's fault!! how about just paying for your beer if it was "only" $5!! bunch of turd burglers!!!
cops in the valley have nothing much to do anyway heh I hope next time they frisk every hair on your cornholes and make you each clean the dingoberries off each other's taint!! punishment ala MOTORIST STYLE beeeeoooootch!
happy motoring.

Hey bingosdingo how many cops show up for a murder? depends on if the murderer is still in the vicinity and how many of them there were!! could be a lot trabala ask yourself how many cops does it take to detain 40 valley jerkoff delinquents who are caught shoplifting from a place of business? yeah. more than what showed up!!
[ report this ]
QUOTE:(two others were arrested and released on scene for possession of marijuana)
uh... earth to everyone if the police didnt actually take you in and process you fingerprint anal cavity search etc. then you werent arrested you were just detained for questioning at the scene of the crime. you got white carded as they say. it's ok, no one saw you all teary eyed in the back of the squad car promising you wont ever smoke drugs again heh
keep on truckin!
[ report this ]
> depends on if the murderer is still in the vicinity and how many of them there were
Translation: Motorist hasn't a clue, but will mouth off anyway.
Like I said. How much was spent on this gargantuan bust of a five dollar beer thief? Two pot smokers are booked and released. The perp is arrested and it takes fourteen cars with likely twenty-eight patrol officers to hold up thirty-six people and bust one shop-lifer for a five dollar brew.
What a waste of time, resources, and man-power. But apparently Motorist thinks this is a good use of our tax dollars...you know, cause you can't let a beer thief off the hook.
[ report this ]
I'm no legal expert but from what I understand if you're accused of shoplifting and detained but no items are found you can bring legal charges on the store for false accusation, or something to that effect. That's why department stores usually wait until shoplifters actually leave the store with the items before detaining them so they have evidence and intent.
[ report this ]
TRANSLATION: It's not a cut and dry number you brainiac it depends on many variables. If the murderer is still on the premises they will send the whole station down there including dogs and helicopters. If it's a gang fight in the hood ese they wont bother unless white people are in danger. If the murder is a day old they will send detectives and maybe a couple squad cars. In this case the whole gang was loitering in front of the store too long and got popped. thats the valley kids for you!
QUOTE:What a waste of time, resources, and man-power. But apparently Motorist thinks this is a good use of our tax dollars...you know, cause you can't let a beer thief off the hook.
hells yes it's a good use of tax dollars. so the cops should just let every 40 member gang roam around and steal long as it's less than $10 ok then how about me and my friends from the football team show up to your mom's house and steal $5 from her then loiter in front of her house because it's not that big of deal only send 2 officers cuz I dont want to violate your mom in her 4rth amendment!
[ report this ]
It's a bunch of people hanging out. Motorist, you talk about this "gang" loitering in front of the store for too long as though they had any idea someone was stealing. Everyone who went to the store besides the thief bought food and drink legally, you know, creating economic activity that probably more then paid for the losses from lone ass hole. Instances of theft from the bike rides are rare, and need to be addressed seriously when it happens. But the bigger positive people rarely talk about is the economic activity these social bike rides create for late night businesses that ordinarily only have a trickling of customers at odd hours.
This was a lone thief hiding under the cover of a group, this was in no way a gang or some kind of coordinated effort. Everyone else in the group and the larger night cycling community was pissed the hell off this guy decided to steal a beer. These people had no interest in being anyone's cover, and would likely have paid the store for their loss had they known an item was stolen.
Unfortunately on a ride a few months ago some beer was stolen, but when the owner made this known the ride organizer paid the loss out of pocket to keep good faith with the store. The community later found the thief when he confessed, repented and coughed up the money.
This was a highly disproportionate use of police force for the minor crime at hand with dozens of people unrelated to the crime having their items searched without probable cause. This is not what our tax money should be paying for.
[ report this ]
I just want to add I'm not trying to defend stealing in anyway, just saying police procedure needs to be followed properly and should be proportionate to the crime. Seems like an awful lot of trouble to dispatch 14 squad cars for a $5 beer when the group would have paid for it had they known there was trouble.
[ report this ]
Motorist: > so the cops should just let every 40 member gang roam around and steal long as it's less than $10
Now you are talking out your butt. No one ever said that was a gang; not even the police.
Slander much?

typical bicycle rider, off in their own dream world of how things should be, living like champagne communists just rolling along with no jobs and no stress heh
have you ever worked retail?? any of you prima donnas? the oldest trick in the book is for coordinated gangs to distract and steal. the manager of this store wasnt about to fall for that old trick. look if you want to complain about something complain about how a member of your gang group stole some beer and made all you cherry asses get searched. but dont blame the cops for searching the whole lot of what they see as a gang of delinquents causing problems for a store which was understaffed to handle the mob. robberies are no joke and not coming down hard on you people for stealing is like an invitation for gangs groups to come back and do even more dirty shit. tell you if I see a big gang group of bicycle riders I know what you people are all about I'll call the cops just on principal!!

I have some inside information indicating that the Motorist is in reality a very, very angry 12-year-old girl.
Let's all move along.

heh I will leave you whiners alone now but for future reference the minute one of them commits a crime cops and store owners dont give two buckets of piss whether 40 people consider themselves to be a group or a gang!! me, I consider the whole lot of you to be bums without jobs. you should be driving cars supporting america through these tough times.

If I'm a communist you are a Nazi. Guess who is closer to the truth with that one.
>have you ever worked retail??
yes. And I never expected $2,000 worth of police protection for a five dollar item.
>any of you prima donnas? the oldest trick in the book is for coordinated gangs to distract and steal. the manager of this store wasnt about to fall for that old trick.
Once again you slander the thirty-six riders who had nothing to do with this. You should be sued.
>look if you want to complain about something complain about how a member of your gang group stole some beer and made all you cherry asses get searched.
Now you are saying I'm a member of a gang? Better back off buster. It'll only take a little time to have the administrators here tell me who you are so I get sic my lawyer on you.
> but dont blame the cops for searching the whole lot of what they see as a gang of delinquents causing problems for a store which was understaffed to handle the mob.
You love that word "gang" don't you?
> robberies are no joke and not coming down hard on you people for stealing is like an invitation for gangs groups to come back and do even more dirty shit.
Administrator. I need to know who motorist is so I can sue him for slander. I'd like this information quickly if you don't mind.
> tell you if I see a big gang group of bicycle riders I know what you people are all about I'll call the cops just on principal!!

It's pretty nice living in a communist fantasy land where my imaginary job pays for bicycles that are delivered to me out of the sky. I pay for my rent in Santa Monica with tooth fairy money and have enough left over to cover my student loan payments. Life is grand!
"you should be driving cars supporting america through these tough times."
What sort of ass backward logic is that? Lets increase our foreign oil dependence so we can raise gas prices even further and contribute to world instability, yay! You know that whole supply and demand thing? Gas prices only dropped in the past two months because demand dropped, the supply is the same. I ride a bike and it makes your gas cheaper.

Why don't they arrest all those gang loser around LA. You can be sure they have to be searched for weapons. This I am seeing in the video is nothing else than a case of the 'douche bag fag' police using their power because they have it and because we allow them to have it. This is not serve and protect... This is 'who can I arrest today because I don't have the balls to go arrest in east LA? LOL at the motorist's "you should be driving cars supporting america through these tough times." Strunzo!!!
