TALK: Zócalo asks “Are the Teachers Unions Too Powerful?” tonight at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium at 7:30. Moderated by Joe Matthews, Irvine Senior Fellow, New America Foundaton, a panel will examine the “promise and limits of the power of the teachers’ unions.” Panelists: Joshua Pechthalt, a vice president of United Teachers Los Angeles; Mikki Cichocki, a board member of the California Teachers Association; David Tokofsky, a former school board member in LAUSD; and Caprice Young, another former LAUSD board member and now CEO of the California Charter Schools Association.
FILM: The Egyptian Theatre is hosting a double-feature of The Fly tonight at 7:30. Co-presented with the LA Opera (because of their own Fly production), the 1958 version screens first with Vincent Price, Patricia Owens and David Hedison. The Return of the Fly (1959) follows with the mad scientist’s son taking over where daddy left off. There’s a discussion between films scheduled with actors David Hedison and Brett Halsey.
FILM: The Montalbán, Nike's new concept store and special events venue in Hollywood hosts Cinema Tuesdays, beginning tonight. The free weekly screening series features innovative motion pictures and live events. On the screen at 8 pm is Sukiyaki Western Django, Famed Japanese auteur Takashi Miike redefines the spaghetti western with two clans battling for a legendary treasure hidden in a desolate mountain town. Quentin Tarantino also stars.
THEATRE Tonight Academy Award®-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri takes to the stage at 8 pm tonight in a limited run of A Bronx Tale at the Wadsworth Theatre. “Palminteri vividly depicts a young boy's rough childhood in the 1960s-era Bronx and the unforgettable people he encountered.”
TEEVEE: The Paley Center continues its fall preview party series with several CBS shows on the bill tonight: Gary Unmarried, The Ex List, Worst Week, and The Mentalist. The event begins at 6 with screenings at 7. The event is free to the public, but an RSVP is required.
