Pencil This In: Friday

Saint Sophia's
St. Sophia's on Normandie hosts the LA Greek Fest this weekend. The church's interior is just stunning. / Photo by pink_fish13 via LAist's flickr pool.

THEATRE: Made Me Nuclear is a “pop music operetta” by Charlie Lustman. The tagline “They radiated him, but they couldn't silence him” refers to his battle with cancer. The show opens tonight at 8 pm at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Tickets are $25.

FILM: The Aero Theatre continues its sci-fi and commentary kick with Time After Time (1979) tonight at 7:30. Malcolm McDowell stars as time travelling H.G. Wells on the hunt for Jack the Ripper. Director Nicholas Meyer will comment on the making of the film while it is screening.

DRIVE-IN FILM: As we mentioned last week, the Steve Allen Theatre has teamed up with Hollywood MobMov to screen drive-in scary movies every Friday until Halloween. The screenings begin at 9 p.m. in the parking lot and in the theatre in case of overflow cars/crowds. Tonight’s movie is Demon Seed. “A self-obsessed scientist (is there any other kind?) creates a machine with a destructive libido.” The lot opens at 8:30 pm.

TEEVEE: It was our bad yesterday when we listed that the Paley Center was hosting the preview party and screenings for FOX last night. The event’s tonight, featuring free previews of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Do Not Disturb and Fringe. The free event runs from 6-8 pm, but RSVPs are required. Members of the casts and creative teams from several featured shows will participate in moderated Q&A’s prior to the screenings each evening.

FAIRS AND FESTIVALS: There’s a ton of fairs and festivals kicking off this weekend. And here are just a few: The LA County Fair opened its gates this morning at the Pomona Fairplex. Those deep-fried Snickers are calling your name. The Original Long Beach Lobster Festival starts tonight at Shoreline Drive and The Promenade, with fresh Maine lobsters flown in daily. And finally, the LA Greek Fest 08 kicks off at 5 pm at Saint Sophia’s Cathedral on Normandie.

All this sounds gas!

Also going down is the L.A. opening of "Momma's Man" at the Sunset 5 and some other Laemmle theaters. Old school indie! Amazing reviews! Q&A screenings with cast & crew at Sunset 5! All the cool kids will be there! Shameless self-promotion!

Another good Film thing -

Director David Mackenzie introducing "Mister Foe" at the Landmark at the 7:50 and 10:15 showings.

My mom has a part in Time After Time. I should make an attempt to go see it.
