Transit Sales Tax for Ballot on Schwarzenegger's Shoulders

If you've been following state Assembly Bill 2321, which simply allows Metro to place a half-cent sales tax increase proposal on this November's ballot, it's been a long, long summer.

Damien Newton at Streetsblog LA says bill author Mike Feuer's office is confident it will pass. "...the Governor has thirty days, until 11:59 P.M. on Tuesday, September 30, to veto the legislation or Measure R heads to the ballot. If the Governor takes no action, the legislation heads to the ballot... Given Schwarzenegger's recent public statements about the rights of voters to decide their own funding issues through ballot propositions, it's almost certain that he won't block A.B. 2321 assuming relations between him and the legislature have thawed."

Currently, the Governor is threatening to veto any bill that crosses his desk until the state's budget is passed. If people want to personally advocate for the passing of the bill, they can call the Governor's office at 916-445-2841 and "voice your opinion on pending legislation," as their phone menu calls it. Be prepared to wait a few minutes on hold and to answer what you support or oppose (AB2321), what the legislation is about (allowing Metro to place the measure on November's ballot), your name and the city you live in.
