Eye Nosh: My Favorite Menudo
LAist Featured Photos contributor ~db~ submitted this tasty treat for us and writes this about it:
I often shop at the Vallarta Market in North Hollywood. A few weeks ago I decided to stop in at Sahuayo Mexican Foods a couple doors down.
I was greeted by a friendly bear of a man, grinning from ear to ear. We talked a bit about favorite foods (I like lengua, he likes hamburgers. Go figure), and was treated like a lost friend. The introductory taco was terrific, and I've been back several times since then.
Among the good things at Sahuayo is their menudo, which I find sublime. Unlike menudo I've had elsewhere, where the tripas are rubbery and tasteless, this version is full of meaty flavor, almost sweet in it's porkiness. The heat varies, even within the bowl, but chopped onions, jalapenos, and cholula are always close at hand for easy ajuste de picante.
I think it's about 8 bucks, though I'm not sure. And on weekends it is served with thick, warm hand-made tortillas, which are worth the price of admission by themselves.
