VP Candidate Palin's 17-Year-Old Daughter is Pregnant
An announcement for Labor Day (or it just happened to fall on it), John McCain's VP running mate Sarah Palin said that her daughter Bristol Palin, 17, is five months pregnant. Palin most recently gave birth to her down syndrome son Trig in April, but rumors spread on the internet that it was actually Bristol's. Today's announcement was in effort to debunk that rumor. Sarah and Todd Palin said they were proud of Bristol's decision to keep the baby and were even prouder to be grandparents. Also: David Markland at California Faultline points out that governing the state of Alaska (pop. 670,000) is like being mayor of Los Angeles, if it were a sixth of its current size.

What does it say for Palin's conservative (read "extreme Christian right wing") credentials that her teenage daughter was so well parented that she got pregnant in high school. What does it say about her rejection of proper sex education in schools?

I know that to Agelenos the "Chicago" model seems normal but has Obama/Daley made Chicago a better place to live for middle class resident? A school system with a 55% minority drop out rate, a murder rate higher than L.A.'s. A 10.5% sales tax.

You can not compare being Mayor of LA to Alaska at all.
There are no street gangs in Alaska.
Alaskas homeless problem is nonexistent compared to LA.
There are no black people in alaska. or mexicans or anything else besides whites and inuits.

Grendal. I agree with you. I woke up this morning knowing that this would be up at the top of comment charts with people bashing this woman.
Living in Los Angeles, I see teenager's having kids all the time.
It looks to me people here are pissed that some little girl in Alaska has a kid, but they don't care when there are so many teenagers in Los Angeles having kids they can't afford.
Oh yeah, OUR California tax dollars pay for THOSE mistakes.

I'd just like to know what Sarah Palin, (possibly the next vice President of the United States), thinks about the effectiveness of abstinence only sex education now that she is experiencing it's limitations first hand.

Well Jrb I will agree with you. I am a bit curious about her beliefs too.
But, I don't think it is her fault that her 17 year old daughter decided to spread her legs to some dude that got her knocked up, regardless of what she was taught.
There are lots of teenage girls that never had "Abstinence Only" sex education that have practiced safe sex and still get knocked up AND decide to have a baby they can't afford last time I heard and saw.

I'll with agree with you that a parent cannot monitor their child's actions and behavior 24/7/365.
At 17 years of age her daughter is biolgically an adult. However if Sarah Palin's daughter were being taught ALL of the birth control methods available to any 17 year old, and if she were practicing them, then she would very likely NOT be pregnant.
I think it's a fair question to the person who could very likely be the next Vice President and who could very likely be making policy, and/or funding decisions about this very thing five months from now.
