Pencil This In: Labor Day Monday

BBQ grillin
Nothing says Labor Day than meat over fire. / Photo by bcmacsac1 via LAist's flickr pool.

It's pretty quiet around the city since many of us are cuing up the grills for later today, but there are still a few events happening around the city...if you know where to look:

JAZZ*: As mentioned earlier, the Angel City Jazz Festival takes place at Barnsdall Art Park today until 10:30 pm. The show features all styles of jazz and from around the world on various stages, including musicians like Motoko Honda, Elliott Sharp, Wayne Horvitz and the Arthur Blythe Quintet.

BENEFIT: Tonight’s the last night of the “Dog & Pony Show” fundraiser at Safari Sam’s that raises money for medical care for LA’s musical community. The music begins at 3 pm with Skip Heller, and continues onto the night with a ton of acts including Mike Stinson and The Blasters. The BBQ starts at 5 pm.

FILM: Cinefamily is hosting a BBQ and screening films all night tonight at the Silent Movie Theatre, beginning at 3 pm. But there’s a twist to their screenings: They’re playing “The Five Minutes Game.” And it’s quite the bargain at $6. They’ve selected 20 films and will screen the first five minutes of each – most of these films aren’t on DVD and you’ve probably never heard of them – afterwards the audiences votes on the film that will be screened in its entirety. Bring something to throw on the grill, too.

SCI-FI: If socializing around the BBQ isn’t your idea fun, but say staying in for a Star Trek: TNG marathon on TV is, then you might want to head over to the New Beverly Cinema for a sci-fi double feature of Battlestar Galactica (the 1978 Lorne Green version) and 1979’s The Black Hole. The movies start at 7:30 tonight.
