Sarah Palin Who?*
As we were watching The Today Show this morning, trying to wake up, Matt Lauer came on live with a bit of an eye opener: Sen. John McCain, the Republican presumptive nominee for POTUSA, took a little bit of wind out of Democrats' sails this morning with the announcement that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has been picked as his running mate. Now we don't know a lot about the Alaska governor, but we do know that (a) she is 44 years old and a mother of five (b) conservative and (c) a former Miss Alaska runner up. More updates as they come. But what do you think? Shocking? Pandering for women's votes? Smart choice?
* 8 am: We've tried to access McCain's website, but it's a little busy right now.

My initial thought:
"What's a Sarah Palin?"
[ report this ]
your headline says it all
[ report this ]
Everything I know about Sarah Palin, I learned from Wonkette.

Somebody's desperate.
Just because you have a vagina doesn't mean women are going to vote for you.
Pro-Life, gun toting, beauty Queen.
[ report this ]
Nice. Just heard about it.
Now tell me this isn't a ploy to try and pick up the still bitter Hillary voters.
[ report this ]
With this news of a 40-something first term gov of a sparsely populated State to be a running mate, McCain's whole "experience" marketing angle just shriveled up. Especially considering his age.
[ report this ]
I don't think it's really taking the sail out of the Dem's wings, being that it's been over a week since the McCain camp said they would be announcing the VP pick the day after the DNC...
[ report this ]
I think Sotto Voce Nyx nailed it. Nice analysis with very few words.
At least she's better looking than McCain.

Obama/Biden vs. McCain/MILF!
The Election is ON!
[ report this ]
Its a desperate ploy by the republican party to create a diverse ticket for their candidates. But, a mother of five? She'll definately get the fertile breeder vote.

"Now tell me this isn't a ploy to try and pick up the still bitter Hillary voters."
wish i could, but i bet that's exactly what was on their minds.
lame.
[ report this ]
Whoa.
Tina Fey doppelganger.
[ report this ]
This is going to be an interesting election - i'm excited!
[ report this ]
I find the "pro-life" and "breeder" comments funny.
And you libs scratch your heads at why L.A. County was 90% non-Latin white in 1950 and just 31% today. Someone white had better start breeding.....
[ report this ]
ooh ooh another white house sex scandal in progress?
argh now i cant stop thinking about mccain and palin getting at it. damn this brain of mine!
[ report this ]
Mother of five. OK. Now I know where the leadership experience comes in. Had me worried for a minute.
arbouler: Thanks for the laugh.
[ report this ]
And you cons, Pabst, remind me everyday why I vote for libs.
[ report this ]
> Someone white had better start breeding.....
But Republicans don't believe in sex. I guess they replicate by mitosis...like bacteria.
[ report this ]
ahh the oil queen for the oil party.

For Bingo's Dingo. I don't think Jeremy is the procreating type. Good thing for him his parents were, lol.

Sarah Palin is probably related to Bill Palin, fire chief at Burlingame, CA, circa 1950. Married to my aunt Annie, they are now both long deceased.
Back to now, the oil: it's obviously to grease the skids for the North Slope. Aviation is another angle, that's the only way we connect with AK both inside & out. Aviation is going to need a friend in the White House, and the reason is Peaking Oil, a deadly threat to friendly skies... Some rail there, needs more.
Hopefully, we shall see signs of Peaking Oil savvy from both sides of the aisle soon, and get going on rehab of the rail network, particularly local rail freight interface, covering long-haul trucking hit with gas & diesel rationing. More info in book: "ELECTRIC WATER", by Christopher C. Swan (New Society Press, 2007) and notes in (peakoil, net) articles 374 & 1037. Open to all.

I would have said pond scum, but yea, ITA Bingo.

Wow...I never realized just much Democrats disapproved of independent-thinking women.
Please, Democrats, please diminish another woman’s record.
Please, by all means, question her experience.
This is very instructive.
[ report this ]
Shes not so much of an independent thinker Youve been fooled, ugly American.
I found this quote on another blog funny:
"So now we've got a gun-totin' annie oakley wife of an oil exec as a vice-presidential candidate, who wants to drill in the Alaska Wildlife Habitat. Goodbye America the Beautiful!"
[ report this ]
Ugly American get's it.
The Democrats treat women like dirt.
Ask Ferraro. And Hillary. And soon Pelosi will be pushed out by Rahm Emanuel.
[ report this ]
1) beauty pageant runner-up
2) former mayor of a 5000 person town
3) partial term governor
now THAT'S what I call experience
sheeeeeeesh
[ report this ]
Pabst: This morning, Ferraro reminded me why I voted for her over 24 years ago.
With her gracious remarks, she demonstrated a lot of class today.
The Obama campaign and LAist commenters…not so much.
[ report this ]
"The Democrats treat women like dirt."
Yea right Pabst, and Republicans are better lovers because they know how to screw an entire country.
[ report this ]
Stop. Having Children.

Because parading an unqualified women around as a token candidate is so much more respectful, right? She'll be destroyed by the public, and it will be humiliating.
This is no different than when the Republicans ran Alan Keyes (as a replacement, non-primary-participating candidate) against Obama in '04. And it'll work just as well. "Hey, Obama's black! If we put another black candidate up there, we'll split the vote!"
[ report this ]
Alaska is not Los Angeles.
[ report this ]
Kudos Jeremy for knowing your political history!
I ran for Congress in Chicago that same year. Bringing Keyes in was a mistake but I was one of the guys who advocated it after the RINO's in Illinois sabotaged Jack Ryan over his divorce from Jeri.
I was seen by television viewers in Chicago as the unwitting observer of a bizzare argument between Obama and Keyes at a Indian parade in Rogers Park. Obama had backed down from the previous debate schedule he had negotiated with Ryan. Obviously with his big lead he wanted as little interaction with the equally verbose Keyes as possible. Keyes got good mileage for a few days by chiding Obama on his reluctance to appear. (they ultimately did 4 debates) Suddenly as I was speaking with Keyes, Obama comes sprinting toward us with media in tow. While Obama was complaining to Keyes about the debate issue Obama kept sticking his index finger into Keyes chest while making his point. I'm from the rough and tumble of both Chicago's trading pits and politics but Obama's physically threatening response was VERY over the top. I opposed him only on policy until then. Since: I hate his guts.

A good looking Pat Buchanan? Bad choice McCain...
[ report this ]
How in the hell did you ever think that would work out in your favor? Oberweis, the scumbag and perpetual loser that he is, would at least have had a shot.
[ report this ]
The guy I REALLY wanted was Ditka!! A few too many dui's and waitresses with big mouths though, lol.
I figured it this way. No matter who ran they were going to lose so why not get a guy who'd at least debate the issues as an articulate conservative. Sort of the black version of Lincoln vs.Douglas.
And you're so right about Oberweis. Websters pictures him next to the def of db.
[ report this ]
Ditka wasn't going to give up his big (no pun intended) Cialis money, either.
Why can't you just put up decent candidates that espouse your values and engage the electorate in honest discussions without having to resort to theatrics?
[ report this ]
Because last night's crowning a the Temple of O was about anything but theatrics.
More please. I'm really enjoying this.
[ report this ]
Most people said the same about BO. Barack Obama who?
[ report this ]
And you libs scratch your heads at why L.A. County was 90% non-Latin white in 1950 and just 31% today.
We do? I thought it was pretty obvious, I think I was taught that unprotected sex=babies when I was in elementary school. Additionally, what is wrong with non-white people having more kids?
*And* what is sexist about pointing out that this woman has very little experience that would prepare her for being VP?
[ report this ]
McCain just sealed the election for the Democrats. Why even have the convention next week and waste all those resources?
[ report this ]
gotta worry about the Electoral College on this one not the popular vote.
remember good ol' Al Gore was supposed to be President but that didn't work out...
get rid of the Electoral Collage and we the people may have our day!

Alaska is just like Los Angeles.

Good oped in today's Times by Tim Rutten
A Palin double standard
The McCain campaign is insisting on deference in the questioning of the vice presidential candidate.
Tim Rutten
September 10, 2008
Connoisseurs of campaign tactics tend to be a pretty cynical bunch, so they'll doubtless find much to admire in the adroit way Sen. John McCain's camp has handled Sarah Palin since she came aboard the ticket. Voters, who tend to nourish an inconvenient hunger for information, may be less impressed. One suspects that sooner rather than later, some will begin to wonder why the GOP is insisting that Palin is entitled to be treated according to a double standard.
