Everyone across this nation should be protesting these puppy mill fronts, informing the public where these pet stores & the internet get their cute little puppies. The mother & fathers of these puppies are living in wire cages their whole lives breeding until dead. It's inhumane and the only way, yes the only way to shut them down is to STOP BUYING PUPPIES & KITTENS in pet stores and on the internet. Please adopt go to your local shelter (pound) and SAVE A LIFE. Don't give in to these greeders.

Good article Zach. Well done Ms Sill.

The best place to get a dog or cat companion is from a rescue org because they are very much aware that you took them out of a bad situation and gave them a good home. They'll love you for it forever.

I'd certainly rather see puppy mills run out of business by consumers' choice not to patronize them than by legislation so I completely support what Ms. Sill is doing. But seeing as how the puppy mill breeding program takes such a harsh toll on the mother dogs who are never given the chance to recover before entering another litter cycle isn't there some animal cruelty legislation that could be applied there as well?

OOOPS.........

"Most pet stores have walls covered with animals looking for a home"

CORRECTION....

Most pet stores that DO NOT SELL animals usually have a wall with photos of animals that need homes.

There are many places to get amazing pets that need homes.
Most pet stores have walls covered with animals looking for a home.
I got my cat at the shelter and my dog from a rescue organization called The Amanda Foundation.
If you're looking to get a puppy look beyond a pet store and rescue a dog in need of a home.
With all the foreclosures in California there are more dogs and cats than ever that need homes.
People losing their homes usually move into rentals and most rentals don't allow pets.

You're spot on. My dog came from a shelter and except for freaks trading in designer dogs I haven't met a Pet Shop Dog in years.

I know a lot of people with dogs and cats. Not a one of them bought the animal at a pet shop. Instead, using adoption services, they have given good pets good homes.

I don't think any I've talked to consider themselves "owners" either. Rather they think of themselves as stewards or caregivers.

Best to Ms. Sill.
