LA Angels defeat Oakland A's 5-1. Angel's starter John Lackey pitched a complete game giving up only one run in the ninth on seven total hits while walking no one and striking out five. This is Lackey's third complete game since coming off the disabled list in the middle of May. And how about some run support? The Angels gave Lackey a lovely third inning where they got timely hits and had four runners come across home plate. The Angel's magic number is 15 to clinch the AL West.
Washington Nationals defeat LA Dodgers 2-1. The only positive of the game for the Dodgers was Derek Lowe pitching a superb game going all eight innings giving up two runs on six hits with one walk. But the Dodgers lost to the worst team in baseball. The only run they scored was on a defensive gaffe by the Nationals catcher - instead of tagging out Nomar Garciaparra coming home off of a Matt Kemp fielder's choice, he tagged home plate when there was no force play at home. Yet again the Dodgers had many chances to score but just gave up meekly by hitting into double plays. Let's face it, the Dodgers are pathetic. And it's very sad to see the only real baseball that's being played is beyond the Orange Curtain.
Tauro FC defeats Chivas USA 2-0. In the preliminary leg of the CONCACAF Champion's League, Chivas still couldn't muster a win. Tauro's Edwin Aguilar scored a goal in the seventh and 67th minute to continue Chivas' winless streak both in and out of MLS competition. The two teams will play at the Home Depot Center on September 2 for the final leg of the round. Which ever team scores the most at the end of that match will go on to the next leg of the Championship.
Notable Notes
- Instant replay will debut in baseball on Thursday. It will only be used to judge fair or foul balls. While some might applaud this move by baseball, I hate it. Instant replay as used in all of sports here in North America is half-assed and a public relations move for the leagues. If you're serious about getting every call correct, then eliminate all field officials and leave it to replay. As for these botched home run calls in baseball, if these new ballparks were built correctly, then there would be no need for replay. When can you recall the last botched home run call at Dodger Stadium?
- In the US Open, not a lot of major upsets to report on. The notable upset of Tuesday was upstart American Sam Querry upsetting the Czech 22nd seeded Tomas Berdych in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Resurgent unseeded German Tommy Haas scored a mild upset over French 12th seed Richard Gasquet in five sets 6-7 (3), 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. On the lady's side, unseeded German Anna-Lend Groenefeld upset 11th seed Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
