Temple Bar in Santa Monica to Close

Santa Monica's Temple Bar to close at the end of September
Jesca Hoop at the Temple Bar by Koga/LAist

We've just heard some very bad news. The Temple Bar, one of the few music venues (and if not the best in town when it came to booking a truly eclectic mix) on the Westside, is set to close at the end of September. More details are forthcoming.

this is awful!!!!!! i'll never forget "discovering" bitter:sweet and Sara Bareilles there before they were fammiliar names. and the place was always packed when I went, with lines out the door. sad sad sad.

brazilian girls, denue fever, cheb i sabbah, jacqueline fuenes, brazzaville, los pinguos, mystic...just some of the shows I've seen there

this is the worst possible news for a venice music lover

This is bad news, to be sure. I used to see some good jazz bands there, and acoustic sets from a New Zealand group called Garageland. But Temple Bar suffered from being on the Westside -- i.e. A Headache To Drive To. Otherwise I'm sure I would have hung out there a lot more often.

this is just insane - the west side needs the temple bar. it always seemed pretty well attended when i was there, so the 'westside music scene effect' was nice because it wasn't too packed in there . .

To me, that really was the Westside's music scene. What else is there that has a consistent presence on the Westside in terms of booking quality acts?

And for the record, Sunset Strip is really not the Westside for me, it's really it's own beast.

This is terrible. One of the few places in this COUNTRY where you could catch Brazzaville...

It's now official, the Westside is a complete cultural wasteland.

I'm truly shocked. This is a real loss for LA. Once the reasons are revealed maybe there will be something that can be done to prevent it.

I must say, Temple Bar is one of my favorite live-music places. Such a shame.

Well We still have The Townhouse & the Delmonte Speakeasy, same owners hopefully same style of music;)

I practically lived in the Temple Bar from 1999-2002. Gonna miss that sweatbox.

Hey guys,

We would like to give you all some relief and clarity on this whole situation: Temple Bar the name is closing, NOT THE LOCATION. IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE A LIVE MUSIC VENUE FOR THE WESTSIDE!!! So don't worry about losing anything in that respect; our plan is to keep an eclectic, underground vibe and continue to feature upcoming and talented artists throughout the years to come!

We know we have some big shoes to fill here but we wanted to at least respond and make sure people know that we are not a corporate entity in any way, shape, or form, but rather two young and enthusiastic owners, soon to be married much the same as Louie and Netty Ryan, and hope we can carry on the legacy of the location.

Our new name will be Dakota Lounge, and please feel free to email either of us directly. We welcome your thoughts and comments, and definitely your concerns. You can reach us at either, sabrina@dakota-lounge.com or alex@dakota-lounge.com.

We will be making a press release both online and in the music publications as things get closer. Our target date to reopen is Halloween, but as you know, things can change so we will keep you posted on that.

We hope to see you all at the grand re-opening!

Warmest regards,

Sabrina and Alex
