Shirts Off! Equal Rights for Topless Women Demanded

Warning: Many of these images are NSFW, or Not Safe for Work.

This past weekend, women took to Venice Beach to protest their right to to be topless in public. "As long as men can be topless, constitutionally women should have the same right, or men should also be forced to wear something hiding their chest," says Founder of GoTopless.org, Rael. In the state of New York, it is legal to go topless on those very same grounds.

"This is quite a contradiction to the gospel concert taking place just a few yards away," someone was overheard humorously saying. Other people were heard saying things like "get over the nipplephobia," "yeah, equal rights for everyone," and "this is the best day LA has ever seen." Well, maybe not the best day, but definitely the one of the more interesting ones. LAist Photographer Tom Andrews was out there to check it out -- here's some of what he saw.

"this is why showing your titties should be illegal"

'Cause Gawd might smite you fer gettin' a boner er thinkin' them evil thoughts er sumpm'!

In my opinion it's not about equality but rather a cultural issue. Western culture and some other cultures are just too hung up on sex and nudity is deemed to be done only behind closed doors.

I personally don't care and don't mind women being topless but until the majority cultural values change I don't think I'll be seeing more topless-ness any time soon.

Good point, Johnny. While it's legal in New York, how often do people actually take advantage of that right?

But hey, at least they have that right.

To quote the Englishman from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World: "This whole country is obsessed with bosoms!"

In my opinion, the type of women who demand such rights are nothing more than perverts. Why in the world would you want to be topless? To force others to look at what the western world considers to be a sexual body part - because obviously they get off on it. Which is precisely why it should not be legal. I see no difference between this and a man pulling his pants down and exposing himself to people.

You don't see young, beautiful women requesting to show their boobs. You don't see respectable women doing it.

Whatsamatta Traci? Breast envy?

Yay boobies, er, women's rights.

In all seriousness, don't be fooled, this is the Raelian Agenda disguised as women's rights.

Some background on the Raelians:

Raëlism or Raëlian Church consists of the practitioners of a UFO religion founded by a former French sports-car journalist and test driver named Claude Vorilhon. Raëlians believe that Vorilhon, who is known by the movement as Raël, received special knowledge and instruction for mankind from the creators of life on Earth, human-like extraterrestrials called Elohim whose technology enabled them to appear as "angels" or "gods" in the eyes of ancient people.

Dear TheRealZajac, the accurate quote is:

And this infantile preoccupation with bosoms. In all my time in this Godforsaken country, the one thing that has appalled me most of all is this prepostrous preoccupation with bosoms! Don't you realize they have become the dominant theme in American culture: in literature, appetizing and all fields of entertainment and everything! I'll wager you anything you like that if American women stopped wearing brassieres, your whole national economy would collapse overnight!"
- Terry Thomas as J. Algernon Hawthorne in It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World

LAist should make this a regular feature and call it, "NUDist."

judging by the crowds i see at the beaches these days, i would prefer everyone to wear as much clothing as psosible. a BANDANA should NOT replace your top.

I don't get the fake nipples, if the point is to be topless why spoil it by sticking a gross little sombrero looking thing to your tits?

@traci, did you not look at the pictures? there were young attractive women there.

For a French/European view on the whole event/fake tits:

It is not a matter of going topless; it is a matter of avoiding solicitations all day.

And that is only stroking the surface

Please please please use a censor bar on the thumbnails. I love checking out LAist at work, but when I saw this I yelled "OH DAMMIT!" and closed it. I then had to avoid it for the rest of the day Too bad there's not much I can do about the IT logs.

At the bottom on the first pic it says (NSFW) which means "Not Suitable for Work". The LAist puts that on all galleries that are questionable.

Yeup, I saw the NSFW tag, but I thought that meant after the jump (after you click the link to the full article), as opposed to STOP SCROLLING NOW OR FACE THE WRATH OF OMG BOOOOBS!

Generally you link to the NSFW photos, as opposed to sticking up thumbnails of them. If you do use thumbnails, you censor them. At least that's what I assumed was the norm.

I think I have an idea to start a religion of my own...

Pragmacat must suffer from Post Traumatic Breast Syndrome.

While I understand the equality issue, instead of making it legal for women to go topless, how about making it illegal for men to go topless. Then we wouldn't have to see what we just saw! Yuch!

swweettt - six fat ugly topless chicks and four hundred dudes gawking and taking pictures.

if that experience in venice is what we have to look forward to with topless beaches - keep the tops on...

How juvenile can you be? The point of all this is not boobs....it's equality, and equal treatment under the law.

If men were required to wear a shirt...and women were not..but were free to choose, the men would go nuts. There would be marches, parades, petitions and loud protests demanding "equal treatment".

Thats all this is. Women should have the RIGHT to go bare chested in a manner equal to the right men have enjoyed for decades. Some women would choose to use that right, and many would not.
The important thing is that they would have the right...whether or not they chose to use it.

In protest I viewed/read this topless.

"If men were required to wear a shirt.."

Then you would not be subjected to the sight of MANmaries or he-boobies every summer.

The girl with the flower in her hair is fucking cute.

Also to Traci, generalizing that only perverts want to be topless is a sure way to make yourself look like a deluded righteous fool.

Yes the OLD lady with the sagging titties and cracked over burned skin. Like some guys have said, this is the type of women that should be BANNED! That is absolutely disgusting!

"How juvenile can you be?"

How humorless can you be? I'm all for equal treatment under the law, but I'm also for cracking jokes. Get your seriousness out of my titties.

Pass me the mothafuckin' EYE BLEACH!!!!!!
