It's official(ish). Delaware Senator Joe Biden is Senator Barack Obama's vice presidential pick, according to a CNN text message alert.
The Obama campaign said nothing is official until a text message is sent out per their plan, but after the Associated Press found out that Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana both said they had been ruled out, Biden became the "likely choice." CNN then quickly confirmed Biden as the winner of the veepstakes. He will make a speech on Wednesday, during the third night of the Democratic National Convention.
Update: LAist Contributor Jeremy Oberstein writes why Biden is the smartest pick for 5 reasons.

Not my first choice, but since that one couldn't keep his dick in his pants, Biden is probably the best of the short list. I've got a lot of issues with him, but he can make an excellent VP and will certainly be able to take on the Wrinkly White Haired Guy without breaking a sweat.
CNN reported this based on a leak from a "high level" Democrat. While it may in fact be true, it is not "official." It could be a plant, a diversion.
Minutes after I posted that, it's on the front page of every newspaper (Wash Post, LA Times, NY Times). It must be true.
Sorry, no. Perhaps 'it must be true' (and it proabbly is), but it's STILL not 'official', and no legitimate news media outlet is calling it 'official', except perhaps some bloggers such as this one.
Wouldn't it be the awesomest thing ever if it wasn't him, after all the punditry of the last 2 hours on CNN.
I agree with Oberstein's five reasons. I think the primary reason Biden is a good choice is his foreign relations experience, since that's been the McCain campaign's big stick so far.
