... if Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signs a bill that's headed to his desk.
Senate Bill 28, that begun making its way around the capitol in 2007 seeks to "prohibit drivers from sending or reading text messages while operating a motor vehicle. The law would go into effect on January 1, 2009, as an adjunct to the existing prohibitions against the operation of a cell phone without a hands-free device," according to State Senator Joe Simitian's website, who represents parts of Northern California.
The bill is headed towards Schwarzenegger's desk, says the Associated Press. Currently, the hands free law is silent on text messaging while driving for adults.

This is the kind of stuff that irks me to no end.
I guess people out there are just so stupid that we need a bill to make it illegal to text than use common sense to know it is not in our best interest (or for others) to do this while driving.
I guess this is no different than reading while driving, putting on makeup, or watching TV.
I wish people weren't so dumb.
How dare the nanny state tell me I can't text while operating 5,000 pounds of steel at high speeds!?! They already went too far when they required me to be sober! Our civil liberties are being trampled, people! Wake up!!!
It's about time!
I absolutely abhor texting in general and it's the main reason I do not own a cell phone any longer.
I really hope this goes into effect.
its not as obvious that someone is text messaging while driving as it is to see they aren't using a hands-free device.
But still, it seems like you should ban text messaging too if you're gonna insist that people use hands-free devices.
What they should do is a huge cover-all. No putting on make-up for the ladies, no eating in your car, no reading a book, ect.
