What do you think? Part One in a Series
Spotted at the BOXeight gallery opening in downtown this weekend, who pulled it off the best? One...white outfit, Two...long plaid coat or Three...brown gingham shirt/grey blazer.

My vote is that this set of photos is terrible, fashion mis-steps aside.
Paul, every vote counts, thanks for your input.
Tom
I'd title this "Beau Brummel On Crack". Or "Dirty Dandies."
Tom, I really think you should dedicate at least a week to the fashion mecca that is Venice Beach.
LOL Bitter B, love your titles!
Hindinwood, I walked Venice Beach on Thursday. I will post two or three pics later this week.
I will finish up this series tomorrow with some beautiful women and a lot more photos to look at.
STYLEist is forever changing so don't think you're stuck with this feel.
Those guys need to work on their makeup. Even for nightime their colors are wrong and excessive. They need to visit a MAC store.
Just so you know, Tom, I do mean that as feedback.
I actually like most of the stuff you've done on LAist for a while, and understand your take on observing individual fashion in LA as opposed to charting trends in LA/US/World fashion. I've always thought LA is unique in fashion because it pretty much doesn't care about fashion. That comes up with some pretty great creations, as well as some gruesome trainwrecks; both are entertaining to witness.
The thing about this set is I felt that the subjects are pretty much going out of their way to perform for the camera. I feel like this takes away some of the feel you usually get.
Also, I'm not telling you this because I feel like my opinion is all-important. I've just observed that you actually tend to care and take criticism well. Cheers, either way.
LA does have a (small) fashion culture that rivals NYC/Paris/etc., one that's a lot more casual and experimental than what you see on something like sartorialist. I'd love to see this scene represented in this series.. instead of cheesy-goth burning-man crap like this. Sorry but I can't hold myself back against utter shit like this. If they didn't think they were so cool I wouldn't lay down the hammer like that. But these people need to know that red streaks in your hair is not edgy.
to get a feel for what I would consider LA's most forward-thinking fashion-conscious scene, spend some time at the chinatown gallery opening nights, at SiteLA in silver lake, at tiny creatures gallery in echo park, at pehrspace, sometimes at gallery openings in culver city, pretty much anything related to the serious art world here (by serious I mean not downtown). LA is the most exciting place in the US to be an emerging artist right now, and this hype/energy is creating some awesome fashion that I think really showcases the strongest points of LA's culture.
Obviously, at most of the places I mentioned you're going to get your fair share of cobrasnake vomit, streetwear fools, and neon-sunglassed-and-mustachioed ambassadors from the williamsburg colonies, but if you have a keen eye and a taste for real individual fashion, you'll see some stuff that can't be seen anywhere else.
oh and I didn't mean to discount the work you've been doing. I'm fortunate that you've been photographing regular peeps all over LA, but when I saw this set I felt I had to say something, mainly because I didn't want people from other places to think this kind of crap passes as 'fashion' around here..
G Pro, I agree the makeup colors were way off, yellow blush and blue eyebrows seems a little strange, day or night.
Paul, thanks for the update, I agree the pics are very staged compared to what I usually do.
I was pulling people from the party and taking them into this garden to take pics.
The result is a bunch of photos that looked staged.
I prefer taking street photos of random people walking around Los Angeles.
I think when I go to art openings people are not dressed how they would dress on a normal day.
Paul, I appreciate your feedback and I need people like you to slap me once in a while ;)
dweebo2220, thanks for the tips on where to find stylish people in L.A. I go to a lot of openings but I don't usually take pics.
I will go to some of the places you listed and try and get some more candid pics of the fashions that I see.
People at openings tend to pose too much and some actually approach me asking if I will take their photo.
I always take the pics but those pics don't usually get published.
The party Saturday night at BOXeight was full of neon sunglasses etc. etc. I will post some of them tomorrow.
I will continue with all types of people and I will probably end up posting a few pics here and there of streetwear fools etc because that's what I see walking the streets.
My focus here is to bring the people from the streets to your eyes even if you don't like their look.
I will do my best to keep things interesting with a mix of everything in Los Angeles.
Thanks again everyone for your feedback and tips, I need to know what you're thinking and I love hearing your thoughts good and bad.
Tom
Tom you can thank me later for all this hype I've caused.....that being said....you seriously need to change your name from the STYLEist.....it's misleading and not represented in your current work.....plus, are you really interested in being mistaken for an actual stylist?
As far as this specific post is concerned, I ditto paul. This doesn't feel natural or on the street at all. Feels like you ran across some attention starved idiots....dressed....well....like idiots
I thought it was an unwritten rule that artists had to dress and act eccentric.
(these were artists weren't they?)
2enlightened, STYLEist already has a name and it's too late to change it.
Our website LAist adds "ist" to many words such as LAistory,MIXist etc.
I took the word STYLE and added "ist" so it would fit into the website LAist.
Do you have a suggestion of how I can explain myself without having to change the name?
You have some great points so I would like to hear an idea or two from you or anyone else that might have a solution.
I don't want to have to change the name.
I also don't want people to confuse me as a stylist either.
"STYLEist" is about catching the style of the people on the streets of Los Angeles.
Everyone has "style" either good or bad.
You don't need name brands or cutting edge fashion to have a "style" style is an individual asset and should be appreciated if you like it or not.
You already know that I'm not trying to pick out fashion trends but I guess others might not understand that.
I think I need to write something describing "STYLEist" that is posted with every STYLEist post.
jrb the two guys with the dog are the authors of the new Anna Nicole book that just came out.
I believe the guy dressed in white pants is a model.
They were all very nice people, I know it's easy to judge people by a first impression but first impressions aren't always correct.
jrb they were eccentric but in a fun way.
jrb, I also know that you weren't judging them :)
Thanks for the comments, I look forward to hearing your thoughts about all of this.
Tom
* I won't be posting the rest of my pics from the party on Saturday night.
I agree with you all that it isn't my style and it shouldn't be part of STYLEist.
aww the party was so much fun and you took a wonderful picture of me and my friend in front of the famous Peter Gurnz artwork with me holding a BOXeight sticker. haha anyway i can get it tom?
please and thank you =]
That guy in the white outfit is absolutely fabulous. What a style statement. Not the usual outrageous LA look. Let's see more of him!
