These guys all had an individual style, which one stands out to you?
* the guy in the shorts designed his shorts using zippers etc. they were amazing and one of a kind

Hmm...the guy in the striped super low v neck t-shirt is super cute!
They all look good, but I'm no fan of the plunging "V" neck...on men that is.
These guys look like the douchebags that I have to run away from in bars.
They all just look like Silverlake hipsters to me.
All that's missing is a fixie.
Stylish - if you consider asswipe a style.
I'm not feeling the true religion jeans with flip flops on the dude on the right. that's just lazy.
What's the deal with this new hair style that looks like they just got out of bed and didn't bother to run a comb through their hair?
And are shorts that go all the way to your ankles still shorts?
(yea I'm an old fart!)
re: the plunging "v" neck
that's no "v neck," it's full on "d neck."
the d neck
zipper shorts, and the guy in them, pretty fly. everyone else just seems generic hollywood/los feliz/S'lake (20 - 30 something) denizen to me. nothing special. i'd have to mostly agree with IndiaBC, wagonMonster and Ali Miller, above.
"What's the deal with this new hair style that looks like they just got out of bed and didn't bother to run a comb through their hair?"
New? You're cute.
K, so I've been reading the LAist for a while now and subsequently the "so-called" STYLEist recently.
It was fine after a few terrible posts, but now I just can't take it anymore.
Whoever is responsible for this pathetic effort toward acknowledging the presumed up-and-coming styles from LA, should not only be fired, but should never work in anything regarding fashion ever again.
So far you have successfully photographed styles that hit 1-2 years ago, a kid who literally painted on his shirts the characters of the show Boondocks, and not to mention photographed what I'm almost positive was a heroin/meth addict, with quite possibly the worst matched clothing choices I've ever seen.
Good god, can't the LAist hire someone with even an ounce of style credibility or at the very least, someone with passion towards their industry focus....this is the place where progressive styles hit mass appeal.....see the sartorialist and realize what a horrendous job you're doing.
I love this series but I'm wondering if any of the subjects are warned when their pix are taken that they're risking insults and ridicule. I'd hate to be one of them coming to this site all wide-eyed only to find their clothing choices shredded and themselves stereotyped and demeaned.
I know it's the nature of the blog beast but it just sucks people gotta be so dagnasty.
And yeah, I'm an old fart, too.
will campbell: i totally agree with you. i try to temper my remarks with the notion that some of these subjects may be coming by to look what others have said about them. none of the guys look bad - well yellow jeans /w giant turquoise sneaks is prob. an acquired taste - but it's just a catalogue of more of the same. nothing really cutting edge. it doesn't make me rethink my notion of style in los angeles.
no wonder NYC / Paris kind of look down their noses at us. i think there is an array of LA style, but this series is proving very single-minded in the whole trasy punk-remix / skinny hipster look that VICE favors.
let's show the array!
Ummm, No.
"...can't the LAist hire someone with even an ounce of style credibility or at the very least, someone with passion towards their industry focus."
Where would be the fun in that?
Oh and Tom is a volunteer.
Everyone has an opinion and I love hearing yours!
If your opinion was always right then everyone else would be wrong, wouldn't that be nice.
That's not reality so feel free to state how you feel about what you're looking at in these photos, please do it with an open mind.
STYLEist is not here to teach and show you what's in or out in the fashion world.
STYLEist is to show you what I see on the streets of Los Angeles.
Yes, I know that Scott Schuman aka Sartorialist is AMAZING and knows his fashion better than anyone online.
I'm not The Sartorialist and I'm not trying to emulate his blog in any way.
brainylagirl you have a GREAT eye, I shot for VICE Magazine for a couple years up until Patrick O'Dell left the company.
I agree that I need to open up to more styles etc etc.
Los Angeles is by no means the fashion capitol of the world, there are 3 photographs by The Sartorialist taken in Los Angeles.
The categories of Sartorialist read as follows: New York, Florence, Milan, and Paris?
Do you really think with his budget he can't afford to come to Los Angeles to focus on fashion, I think he chooses to focus on the listed cities above for a reason.
I started STYLEist as a blog that will evolve with the readers, I have no idea who is on this site so it's impossible for me to please everyone.
I'm attracted to the styles of street people which sometimes even includes homeless people.
Be happy that you have The Sartorialist to guide you through fashion, I'm only here to show street style that I can find on the streets of Los Angeles.
Again, I'm not here to spot trends or tell you which color is hot this season.
If you don't like my style and think my choices are not up to par then you don't have to look at my posts, there are plenty of options for you to get true fashion tips.
Please have a sense of humor when reading STYLEist, style can be fun and amusing it doesn't always have to be perfect and cutting edge.
Thanks,
Tom Andrews
*I'm not paid to do STYLEist, I do this becuase I have a passion for photography and people on the streets.
Well said Tom. Keep up the good work.
Tom! You go boy! (is that kosher; you know, "go boy?")
benjamin: Bwah ha ha ha! I get it now.
2enlightened: So don't read it. Sheesh! I was going to comment on your handle, but am trying to rein in my incendiary remarks.
Will: I'll bet Tom warns them as we've yet to see any pantie wedgie pulling or nad sack scratching...thankfully.
I kind of like the zipper shorts. Especially the way the guy used similarly colored but different patterned fabrics. The length is a bit longer than I'd call "shorts", but it seems to work.
You gals drooling over "D" neck boy need to get out more.
Tom,
I apologize for my misinterpretation of your intention with the STYLEist. In that case, my comments above are void and unfounded
I guess my view of what style truly means differs from the other readers of this site.
As a multi-time a day reader of the LAist, I know that you depend on comments and feedback to direct the way your site/blog is going. Please do not take my comments as offensive, but as somewhat constructive and a way to understand what at the very least one of your readers si thinking.
That being said, I don't feel that many people, living in LA, concerned about style....would tag a picture of a guy wearing true religion jeans, flip-flops, an american apparel t and a necklace he bought at urban outfitters as anything progressive, or even connected to LA whatsoever. You could literally go to any town in the US and take the exact same picture.
Bottom line: I'd like to see styles more unique to LA.....or just completely unique in general....thanks
It's okay of you like asswipe style Tom.
Thanks for the incredible feedback, I appreciate it.
2enlightened, I guess I should have an explanation of what I'm doing somewhere on STYLEist. I'm sure there are a lot of readers that are thinking the same thing but don't say anything.
The title STYLEist is just STYLE with the ist which goes with ist in LAist, I guss it implies that I'm trying to be a "stylist", I'm not.
I think over time people will understand that I'm out taking pics of the people of Los Angeles and not trying to influence fashion in any way at all.
High fashion people don't really walk the streets in Los Angeles.
We don't have a subway that goes from one end of the city to the other so people that can afford Gucci etc. can also afford to get in their cars and avoid the streets.
We don't have beautiful cobble stone streets with 19th century architecture perfectly lit with cloudy skies in Los Angeles either, which makes for dramtaic and beautiful fashion photographs.
I would love to be in New York City or Paris taking street fashion pics but that's not a reality for me right now.
I will continue taking pics of the people in my city, I know people will wonder WTF is he thinking, I'm not thinking I'm observing what I see.
The majority of Los Angeles isn't considered beautiful in the classic way Paris or New York City is.
Los Angeles has style but a unique style, graffiti, cars, more homeless than any city in the world, a downtown that doesn't have a large park to hang out in or even an area to hang out period.
I think most people would agree that Los Angeles is not a good city to walk the streets looking for high fashion men and women.
If I happen to see a girl in a beautiful vintage Gucci dress and she allows me to photograph her, trust me I will.
I'm open for suggestions and locations, if you have any ideas of where to go let me know.
I tried Melrose between La Cienaga and Fairfax but all of those stores have parking in back or valet.
I didn't get one pic of a stylish Angelino walking down Melrose.
I did end up buying a cool jacket at Marc by Marc Jacobs for a very good price while I was out searching for people to photograph.
The most stylish person that I encountered was the guy that waited on me at Marc by Marc Jacobs.
He was wearing 3 neon t-shirts, black shorts, neon green sunglasses on cap, neon green tennis shoes and a great attitude.
I didn't photograph him but I told him that he looked amazing.
For now you will continue to see the fashions that I pass as I walk the streets of L.A.
Please don't be shocked to see a homeless person or a transgender, they are part of my city too and some of them do have style, maybe not mainstream but it's style.
Thanks again for the feedback everyone, I'm posting this for you guys so help me out :)
Tom
Tom, do you know Patrick O'Dell!!! Omg let's talk.
p.s. I love what you're doing so keep doing it.
Hi Carrie,
I haven't talked to Patrick in over a year.
He asked for large files of my pics that were used in Vice magazine, he wanted to put them in
Vice DOs & DON'Ts: 10 Years of Vice Magazine's Street Fashion book.
Patrick left Vice and the new person in charge didn't publish my pics in the book.
Patrick was very cool about it, he felt really bad about what happened.
I didn't do anymore photography for Vice after Patrick left.
It was pretty cool that he was planning on using my pics in the Vice Book.
Tom, i know this is a crazy coincidence, but Scott Schuman literally today started making Los Angeles posts. You should take a look
Thanks 2enlightened
I just checked out the pics from Los Angeles, that is definately a crazy coincidence!
I took some pics with you in mind today, the pics will be posted on STYLEist Friday.
