TV Junkie: Tuesday

Misty May-Treanor digs during a beach volleyball match against CubaNBC's primetime Olympic broadcast isn't as horrible as we thought it would be but it still suffers from the reasons we went over in last week's post. The live broadcasts have been good - thanks NBC for that and for some of the streaming online content. There's definitely TV worth watching in there, just not enough of it despite the hype.

For those seeking something other than rehashed Olympic moments, you are somewhat SOL when it comes to what you can get on TV. Very little in terms of worthy new broadcasts to watch or movies, oh yeah, TCM is showing Hitchcock's Vertigo _again_. Late night is repeats except for Ferguson who is interviewing Kiefer _again_.

Doubtless you've been watching your piled up Netflix DVDs or cruising online - for a humorous take on the Olympics, you could check out Joost's Olympic events that didn't make the cut.

8:00pm XXIX Summer Olympics NBC - Gymnastics, women's team final; swimming finals: men's 200m butterfly, 4x200m relay, women's 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley; beach volleyball, men's: USA vs. Argentina; diving, women's platform synchronized final

8:00pm The Secret Life of the American Teenager ABC Family - Amy considers a change in her living situation; Ricky won't act responsibly.

9:00pm Big Brother 10 CBS - The veto meeting and competition are held.

9:55pm Primetime: Medical Mysteries ABC - A man in Indonesia looks like he is turning into a tree; a rare paralyzing condition that attacks first-time surfers. Nice! ABC is taking on the Olympics! What would you rather watch, more gymnastics or a guy that's turning into a tree?

10:00pm Demetri Martin. Person Comedy Central - The comic performs!

10:00pm Smash Lab: Unbreakable Car Discovery - The team tries to make a car crash-proof by developing reactive armor technology and a new metal-aluminum foam.

10:00pm Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood Oxygen - Season Finale. Someday I hope to type: Series Finale.

What live broadcasts? We're still on tape delay from the east coast. I'm quickly learning to stay away from ESPN on nights of big events.

stay away from CNN, too. they totally ruined that whole men's 4x100 swimming relay for me on sunday night.

NBC is doing OK, but I have two (OK three) gripes. Why just NBC? And why does the NBC website do streaming in SilverLight only; what about Linux users? And why just Visa as the only credit card accepted (thanks for telling me Mr. Freeman) for that matter?

What a great way to demonstrate the beauties of capitalism by limiting (to one) the number of accepted vendors. Guess that's Chinese Democracy.

I understand the delays as I'm very unlikely to be up at 2AM to watch an event. The HD broadcasts are fantastic. I do wonder about the three second blackouts every ten (or so) minutes though.

I hear you on the "LIVE" stuff - NBC misleadingly puts "LIVE" icons all over the primetime broadcast even though it's 15 hours old. Loathsome.

I'm sorry but I can't stand Smash Lab. They spend a whole hour on 1 experiment, prancing around executing un-entertaining scripted material. Plus I'm fairly sure I could do a far better job than that chick they have on the show. She really pisses me off.
