In Los Feliz, you've got the trendy Fred 62 with their talked about Mac Daddy & Cheese Balls ($6.62) coated in "spicy breadcrumbs" (that we did not find too spicy). Over in Sherman Oaks, there is the eclectic Boneyard Bistro who serves up Fried Mac n’ Cheese ($4/$6), which are more accurately, shells. Put them face to face and who wins the battle?

Play by Play: Fred 62 vs. Boneyard Bistro

  • Consistency: Mildly Gooey vs. Less Gooey
  • Texture: Lightly Crisp Shell, Too Soft Inside vs. Medium Crisp Shell, Al Dente Inside
  • Flavor: Traditional, No Pizazz vs. Addicting Taste
  • Accessories: Ranch Dressing and sprinkled Cilantro vs. Crystal Louisiana Hot Sauce
  • Next Time: Split with Friends/Maybe Order Something Else vs. Order this Again & Again
  • Cold Left-Overs Test: Way Better than the Hot Version vs. Just as Good

i had BB's fried mac n' cheese last week and i thought it was pretty meh. On the other hand I've heard bad things about the restaurant in general but I thought the BBQ was great.

Yeah, BB gets very mixed reviews, but for me, I'm a sucker for their mac and cheese (and their brie nachos), more than Fred 62's.

Fred 62 is like Alcove, also in Los Feliz...the food is no better than it has to be...

What timing. I ate for the first time at Boneyard Bistro last night AND had the friend Mac & Cheese as a side dish. I must say I was not impressed at all. The texture was nice but it had no flavor, not even a hint of salt and pepper. It was like chewing on fried flour paste.

At least the brisket and collards were decent and their beer selections top notch, plus they seem to have a number of different drink specials (last night 25% off bottles of wine).

Really?? OMG, we looooove us some Boneyard Bistro! Get the heirloom tomato tower appetizer - summer only.... Go on beer flight night, go on fried chicken night, go on seafood night!
Of course, I also love Fred's - Best Waffle Sundae Ever.

Just had the Mac n cheese from Fred's last saturday and wasn't impressed at all....
